About Ellis
I’m an experienced Maths and Physics tutor with a PhD in Engineering and the Environment from the University of Southampton and a BSc in Physics from the University of Sussex.
Alongside tutoring, I work as an Energy and Carbon Manager, where I use maths, physics and data analysis to solve real-world problems. I enjoy being able to show students that the subjects they study at school have practical applications beyond the classroom.
I’ve previously tutored students at GCSE and A-Level across a range of abilities, from those needing extra support and confidence through to students aiming for the highest grades. I’ve also worked with students in secondary school and sixth-form settings.
I’m friendly, patient and approachable, and I try to make tutoring feel supportive rather than intimidating. I particularly enjoy helping students reach the point where a topic that previously felt difficult suddenly starts to make sense.
Outside of work, I enjoy sport, music and spending time outdoors, and I’m based on the Isle of Wight. I offer both online tutoring and limited face-to-face tuition locally.

My lessons are relaxed, supportive and tailored to the individual student. I know that Maths and Physics can sometimes feel overwhelming, so I focus on breaking difficult topics down into clear, manageable steps and making sure students understand why something works rather than just memorising a method.
I adapt each session depending on the student’s goals and confidence level. Some students need help rebuilding the fundamentals, while others are aiming for the highest grades and want to focus on challenging exam questions and technique. I’m equally comfortable working with both.
A typical lesson will usually combine explanation, worked examples and guided practice, before giving the student the chance to solve problems independently. I encourage students to ask questions throughout and try to create an environment where they feel comfortable saying when something doesn’t make sense.
For students preparing for exams, I place a strong emphasis on past-paper questions, problem-solving and exam technique. We look not only at how to get the correct answer, but also how to recognise what a question is asking, structure working clearly and avoid common mistakes.
My background in Physics, Engineering and energy also means I can often connect topics to real-world examples, which can help make abstract concepts more intuitive and interesting.
Ultimately, my aim is to help students become more confident and independent, so they feel capable of approaching unfamiliar problems rather than relying on memorised solutions.
