About Emma
I have over 8 years of experience teaching and tutoring students across a wide range of ages and biology topics. I began tutoring in high school, working with elementary and middle school students in subjects ranging from geology to cell biology. During my undergraduate degree, I worked as both a biology tutor and a teaching assistant for introductory biology courses at my university. I continued mentoring and teaching throughout my master’s degree and am now pursuing a PhD focused on the neuroscience and sensory biology of sharks while also working toward my certificate of professorship.
Although my research specializes in animal biology and neuroscience, I genuinely enjoy teaching all areas of biology, from foundational concepts to more advanced topics. My goal as a tutor is not just to help students memorize information, but to help them truly understand it and build confidence in their abilities. One of the most rewarding parts of teaching is seeing a student finally connect with a topic that once felt overwhelming and begin developing their own curiosity and excitement for science.

I have always loved teaching and mentoring students, and I have continued tutoring throughout high school, college, and graduate school. As a PhD student actively involved in biological research, I focus heavily on helping students move beyond memorization and toward genuine understanding. My goal is to show students how biology connects to the real world and why these concepts actually matter outside the classroom.
My lessons are personalized to each student’s needs and learning style. I typically begin by reviewing homework, upcoming exams, or specific topics the student is struggling with so I can identify where confusion is happening. From there, I break down foundational concepts in a clear and approachable way before moving into more applied, hands-on thinking. I often use real biological examples and problem-solving to help students connect abstract concepts to living systems.
For example, if a student is struggling with the cell cycle, we might explore how different cell types in the body divide and renew at different rates, why skin cells and blood cells constantly regenerate, and how those processes relate to function, development, and disease. By connecting biology to real examples, students are often able to build a much deeper and more intuitive understanding of the material.
I always end sessions by revisiting homework questions, practice problems, or upcoming tests to make sure students feel more confident applying what they learned independently in class.
