About Matthew
I am a composer, teacher, and editor of music with 15 years' experience teaching students from beginner to university level. I hold a PhD in Music and have a particular interest in helping students develop their musical understanding, confidence, and exam skills. My professional experience as a composer and editor informs my teaching, allowing me to support students in areas including analysis, composition, theory, and performance. My own compositions have been performed across Europe.

My composition and creative music lessons focus on developing each student’s individual musical voice through a combination of analysis, practical writing, and guided experimentation.
We study scores and explore music in detail to understand how different composers achieve particular effects, and to identify what works well in music and why. This analytical approach is used to inform and inspire students’ own creative work.
Students are given structured composition tasks to complete between lessons, designed to develop specific skills and encourage consistent creative progress. I provide formative feedback on this work to help refine ideas, strengthen technique, and develop more effective compositional writing.
I also offer targeted support for GCSE and A Level composition coursework, including guidance on developing ideas, improving structure, and refining final submissions to meet assessment criteria.
The aim is to build confidence in composing, arranging, or songwriting while developing a deeper understanding of musical language and structure.

Details
My hourly rate includes lesson preparation and personalised tuition. Any assessment, marking, or detailed feedback on compositions or written work is carried out during scheduled lesson time unless agreed separately in advance.
I operate a 24-hour cancellation policy. Lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice will be charged unless an alternative lesson can be arranged within the same week. I will always try to be as accommodating as possible.
