About Excelsior Online
I have a PhD in English Education and have worked in higher administration both as a Dean and Director for graduate and undergraduate departments. I have been teaching English for over 20 years and thoroughly enjoy helping students reach their potential. I enjoy empowering students to gain confidence and dexterity in oral and written communication skills, analytical reasoning, and general knowledge so they can successfully showcase and present themselves thoughtfully and authentically and articulate their ideas clearly and effectively.

I have a very hands-on, interactive approach of building ELA concepts and skills in a methodical manner based on your needs and weaknesses. We convert those weaknesses into strengths and soon advance your abilities that will directly improve your grades and performance at school.
For the curriculum, I focus on key components to address gaps in their learning, strengthen their knowledge for standardized exams, and prepare for the higher grades and college. In this light, I include the following in our curriculum:
• General Knowledge: through research, exploration, and reflection, we build general knowledge necessary for the SAT, for strengthening performance in school, and for college. We look at history, art, social and psychological impacts and issues, etc., often based on the book we are reading to build, connect, and broaden the knowledge base and build critical thinking skills.
• Grammar: key concepts needed and used in writing and standardized tests
• Sentence Writing: developing style and structure while applying vocabulary and grammatical concepts for consistent usage and precision in clarity and meaning.
• Vocabulary: used in standardized tests, writing, and oral communication
• Reading Comprehension and Analysis: with heavy focus on analysis as opposed to basic summarization. We focus on moving from basic comprehension to evaluation and synthesis while developing critical thinking skills through written reflection and discussion.
• Writing Paragraphs and Essays: focusing on organization, logical flow, analytical reasoning, clarity, and conciseness, we work on a variety of rhetorical formats in preparation for school, SAT and college essay expectations.
While this is the overall curriculum plan, it is completely customized the student’s strengths, weaknesses, and needs for upcoming tests and high school. There will be times when certain parts of the curriculum will take more time and effort than others. Above all, I tailor the curriculum and thus the homework to the student’s personal workload and needs so that the goals for each session can be met realistically and fairly.
