About Matt
I'm a PhD-qualified data scientist with a decade of experience applying machine learning across clinical research, drug discovery, and healthcare data science. My PhD in Complexity Sciences from the University of Bristol gave me strong mathematical foundations in probabilistic modelling and complex systems — the theoretical grounding that makes ML genuinely make sense rather than just work.
I've supervised nine researchers through machine learning projects, published peer-reviewed research, and founded an ML-enabled biotech company. I enjoy teaching ML because the gap between "it runs" and "I understand why" is where the most interesting conversations happen.

My machine learning lessons are designed for university students, postgraduate researchers, and professionals looking to build practical ML skills. I cover the full range — from foundational supervised and unsupervised learning through to deep learning, neural networks, and applied ML pipelines in Python or R.
I've applied machine learning in real research and clinical settings for over a decade: classifying longitudinal physiological data for rare disease biomarker discovery, building triage pipelines for NHS clinical partners, and supervising postgraduate students through full ML project cycles. I bring that applied perspective into every session — not just theory, but how ML actually works in practice.
Sessions typically run an hour and are online, using screen sharing for coding work. I'm comfortable working from scratch with beginners or going deep on specific methods with more advanced students.

I had the pleasure of working with Matt as my supervisor during my MSc project in Health Data Science at the University of Exeter. Under his guidance, I developed a demand and capacity planning model for NHS endoscopy services, which involved understanding a complex real-world care pathway, engaging with non-technical stakeholders such as clinicians and operational managers, and implementing an ordinary differential equation model in Python.
Throughout the project, Matt was an excellent tutor and mentor. He was able to explain complex analytical and mathematical concepts clearly while also encouraging me to think independently. When I encountered problems regarding the equation construction and model parameter tuning, Matt always replied promptly and helped me develop my own solutions. His supervision helped me build confidence in approaching an unfamiliar multidisciplinary problem and translating analytical methods into work with practical value for healthcare services.
Overall, I would highly recommend Matt to students or professionals looking for thoughtful, patient, and technically knowledgeable tutoring, particularly in data science, biomedical and healthcare analytics, and applied quantitative projects.Matt was a supervisor to my master's project at the University of Exeter in 2023. At the time, the essence of the project was completely new to me, there were many aspects I have had to learn from scratch in order to get a grip on it. Luckily, Matt was the exact type of mentor and manager I needed to navigate in the time of uncertainty. He was passionate about his job, genuinely knew how to listen and support, held deep expertise in the subject matter, organized work effectively and conveniently for everyone involved. If you are considering Matt for a particular position, or simply looking to get to know him better, I can wholeheartedly recommend him.
