About Bukirwa Irene
I am very passionate about teaching both science and education, and I strive to use them to make a positive difference in students’ lives. My strongest traits within my personality are being a good listener, motivator and mentor. I am trustworthy, loyal, approachable, enthusiastic, adaptable, decisive, open-minded, and caring. In teaching and learning, I dismiss the myth that Chemistry is difficult. I have established through research and experience that some approaches used to teach Chemistry do not put into consideration that the Chemistry subject is abstract (imaginative) and progressive (concepts taught in earlier stages serve as building blocks for more advanced topics). The principle that I strive for in the classroom is clarity – in presenting material, enhancing students’ learning to understand content and creating a learning environment where students are motivated to learn. Clarity manifests itself in my teaching methods where I unpack concepts for students to understand.

Proficient in English, I empower my students both at school and university levels with skills to understand a concept in terms of: “What the concept” means, “Why it is important,” and “How it is applied”. I emphasize the importance of understanding the chemical principles illustrated by the experiment in relation to the theoretical content. Key concepts like “water or atom” are progressively unpacked using other relevant Chemistry concepts such as, atom, electrons that fall within the scope of work. Concepts are explained and linked to each other, to enhance understanding and explanation of a major concept. What makes me unique as a teacher is to care and motivate my students. My experience as a lecturer, tutor and academic advisor has shown me that every student is unique and has potential to succeed when supported appropriately.
