About Varun
I am a PhD candidate in Human Development and Social Policy at Northwestern University with training in quantitative research, behavioral science, and applied data analysis. I also have experience as a middle school math teacher, where I worked with students across a range of skill levels to strengthen foundational understanding and improve academic performance. My professional experience in research and consulting has further developed my ability to explain complex ideas clearly and structure effective problem-solving approaches.
My tutoring approach is structured, patient, and individualized. I focus on identifying the root cause of misunderstanding—whether conceptual, procedural, or confidence-related—and then building understanding step by step through clear explanations and guided practice. I emphasize active engagement, frequent checks for understanding, and encouraging students to explain their thinking so they develop independence as well as accuracy.
What sets me apart is my ability to combine rigorous analytical training with practical teaching experience and insights from learning science. I adapt my approach to each student rather than using a one-size-fits-all method, with the goal of building both performance and long-term confidence.
I work with middle school, high school, and early college students in math and quantitative subjects such as statistics and data analysis, as well as students preparing for exams or strengthening foundational skills.

My approach as a tutor is rooted in making abstract concepts concrete, intuitive, and relevant to how students actually think and learn. I draw on my background in education, behavioral science, and quantitative research to identify where students are struggling cognitively, not just academically, and then adapt explanations to fit their level of understanding. I emphasize active learning through guided problem-solving, frequent checks for understanding, and connecting new material to prior knowledge so students build durable comprehension rather than memorization.
A typical lesson begins with a quick diagnostic or review of prior material to identify gaps, followed by focused instruction on one core concept broken into manageable steps. I then work through examples with the student, gradually shifting responsibility to them through scaffolded practice and real-time feedback. Sessions usually end with a short recap and targeted practice problems designed to reinforce mastery and highlight any remaining confusion.
What sets me apart is my ability to combine rigorous analytical thinking with an understanding of learning processes from both teaching and neuroscience perspectives. I am especially strong at diagnosing why a student is stuck—whether it’s conceptual misunderstanding, procedural confusion, or attention-related challenges—and adjusting my approach accordingly. My goal is not just to help students perform better in the short term, but to build long-term confidence and independent problem-solving skills.
My lessons are best suited for middle school, high school, and early college students in math, statistics, and related quantitative subjects. I also support learners preparing for standardized tests or students who need help strengthening foundational skills before advancing to more complex material.
