About Laura

I have extensive experience with Art History! I have one BA and 2 MAs in Art History, and I'm currently completing my PhD in Art History. (I also scored a 5 on the AP Art History test in high school.) My area of specialty is Italian Renaissance Art History, with a focus on Venetian architecture, but I'm equipped to teach any Art History class (most of my teaching experience at UCLA was in subjects outside of my area of specialty).

I have experience not only lecturing and teaching in the classroom, but also navigating how to do archival research for my dissertation. I've successfully given papers at conferences, submitted an article for publication, and received numerous fellowships for my research, so I'm an active member of the field.

One of my favorite parts of the PhD so far has been teaching. I loved having the opportunity to connect with students, and to travel together through space and time to some of the most important and enchanting moments in the history of art. Teaching has helped me strengthen my own knowledge base. I always learn from my students!

I am approachable, understanding, patient, and excited to meet you! I hope you'll let me be part of your Art History journey.

I approach each lesson as a collaborative experience: it's created by the student and the tutor together. I want lessons to be conversational and comfortable. I will tailor the lessons to how you learn, how you progress, and what works for you.

A typical lesson begins, of course, with artworks! I prioritize examining the artworks themselves, because they are the primary sources for Art History. We start out looking at relevant examples and practicing visual analysis skills. After this, we might look at some relevant readings or written sources, and have a discussion about the content as it relates to selected artworks for that lesson. There will always be an emphasis on the historical, political, social, and religious contexts of the artworks we examine--this is one of the main tasks of Art History. We might also practice some writing exercises (for AP Art History & college level students). I can also assist with writing papers--this is a huge skill of Art History too. My lessons can be tailored for middle school-college students.

Whatever your level, I'll meet you where you are! I was a beginner once too, and I remember the challenges of learning Art History for the first time. It can be a daunting subject, but it is also exciting, fascinating, and fun!
