About Miriam Ami
Teaching enables you to witness first-hand the development of those in which you encounter daily, being able to help frame a mind-set of a young person when they may not be able to have someone to look up to and be able to see what they are capable of; is a really beautiful thing and what drew me to the profession initially.
Growing up, I always had an interest in mathematics and my father helped me when solving problems and finding appropriate solutions. As a family, this gave us an opportunity to learn and build on a common interest. His patience and enthusiasm was the first example I had with a good teacher and set the standard for me to journey down this career path. Mathematics enabled me to be persistent and hardworking which remains to be skills that I benefit from.
Taking part in a PGCE primary with mathematics specifically has continued to cater towards enhancing innovating my pedagogical strategies and giving me a deeper understanding of curriculum. By having a more in-depth understanding and appreciation of assessment techniques of teaching in different environments will help me to differentiate my teaching to a range of different pupils.
Design and mathematics have always been principals that work in sync to one another. Studying a PGCE in primary maths and a BA in interior design at university has highlighted that without calculation and precision it’s hard to achieve uniformity. This course proved to be beneficial to my future as it encouraged my independent design thinking, which is a fundamental part of my academic journey and working with students effectively. I learnt persistence and endurance throughout university which are necessary to teaching any subjects. Post-graduation, I have grown creatively which in turn should enhance my teaching approach. My undergraduate degree being very creative-oriented taught me the importance of learning in a more creative manner so that topics are easier to grasp, whether that uses more visual aids or kinaesthetic methods.
To support my educational journey, I have participated in school placements at two ofsted outstanding schools, Curwen primary and for the previous autumn term, Essex primary school. As a student-teacher, I have participated in managing behaviours in a classroom, overseeing and planning lessons effectively to cater for different abilities and building on my teaching strategies to refine my analogies to scaffold subject knowledge. This has definitely developed my confidence in a classroom and handling problems on a one to one basis. Experiences like this have helped build relationships with teaching professionals. Other than educational experience, I have several years of commercial experience, which has helped me to become accustom to a change of working style and improved my leadership skills. I believe these skills will help my ability of being a respected tutor as I can easily work well with a team identifying my strengths and weaknesses.
