About Daniel

Daniel Ramjattan is an accomplished classical guitarist, performance coach, and educator based in Toronto, ON. He completes his doctoral dissertation on music performance anxiety (MPA) at the University of Toronto this year, where he received the New College doctoral fellowship in 2021-2022 for his research. On top of his active teaching schedule at Wilfrid Laurier University, where he runs the classical guitar area at the Faculty of Music, Daniel has given guest lectures on MPA at McGill University's Faculty of Music, University of Toronto, Wilfrid Laurier University, Memorial University, and at the Guild of Carillonneurs of North America. He also has upcoming presentations this year at Mount Royal University and the Guitar Society of Toronto’s Guitar Weekend. He gives regular performance coaching to clients across many instrumental backgrounds, including guitarists, carillonneurs, and pianists. Many of Daniel's students have received top prizes at local and provincial music competitions and have received first-class honors with distinction in their RCM exams and have joined undergraduate and graduate music programs across Canada. As a performer, he has placed as a finalist in the Montreal and Hamilton International Guitar Competitions, has taken first prize in the OMFA Provincial guitar competition twice, and placed second in the 2016 National Music Competition in Edmonton, Alberta. He has given recitals in Canada, the US, Japan, Austria, and Italy, has premiered dozens of new works for guitar by composers from all over the world. He recently released his debut solo guitar album, Inspirations: New Music for Solo Guitar, in 2022, which was featured on CBC Radio's album of the week in March of this year on all streaming platforms thanks to a generous recording grant from the Ontario Arts Council.

All of the work done in each coaching session is totally confidential and non-judgmental, with an interest in optimizing performance, not simply ridding clients of their ailments. All individuals are welcome in coachings, regardless of their age, gender, orientation, race, or economic or cultural background. I make a commitment to listen to individuals as patiently and unassumingly as possible, in order to help understand them as well as possible. In each coaching session, done via Skype/Google Hangouts, or in person with the individual's instrument, clients gradually become aware of their physiological, cognitive, and behavioral responses to performing, helping them create a clear picture of the way their music performance anxiety manifests uniquely in their life. We also discuss contributing factors which may have led to their anxiety, especially in relation to their past instructors and personal attitudes to performing. After this has been done, we build individualized strategies for performing with increased confidence, awareness, and fluidity, both in and out of the practice room. We develop clear strategies to increase focus and flow during performance, to optimize players to reach their performance abilities as they envisioned them in the practice room, and to deal with themselves and others more accurately and practically in the context of their wider personal and professional life.

Find out more about Daniel

  • 1. When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

I began studying the guitar when I was 10 years old when I first listened to the recordings of John Williams and heard my teacher play "Asturias- Leyenda". By the time I was 12, I made a steadfast decision to pursue guitar as a career.
  • 2. What makes you passionate about your subject?

I love teaching because I believe that if you strongly believe in the growth of your discipline, you should contribute to its growth. Teaching is a way of giving back by sharing by 18 years of experience playing the guitar with others.
  • 3. What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

I love teaching because I love watching people achieve their goals, and I especially love to see how it develops their character as people. I notice over time that many of my students have become more patient, goal-oriented, and positive in their life as a result of growing with the guitar. And, of course, I am especially proud when my students win awards or continue on with guitar or composing, such as one of my students who is currently enrolled in the University of Toronto's Bachelor of Music Performance Program.
  • 4. Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? *

All of my teachers have inspired me immensely. My first teacher was Dave Santandrea, and he made me fall in love with the classical guitar and its unique ability to be an acoustic, portable instrument that functions as a full orchestra. Wilma Van Berkel taught me how to become more thoughtful, ergonomic, and precise. Patrick Roux taught me to play like a musician, and not just a guitarist, Bruce Holzman taught me to always listen carefully to the sound I produce, and Jeffrey McFadden helped me refine and polish my technique to a professional level. On the way, I also studied with other teachers for months at a time, like Lorenzo Micheli and Denis Azabagic, two of my favourite guitarists in the world.
  • 5. What are your keys to success?

Practicing, maintaining a positive and healthy lifestyle, and most importantly, having a clear goal and long-term plan in mind. Even if things don't go exactly as intended, following a clear path helps you immensely on the confusing road to musicianship.
