About Amy
I am a PhD student in Theology at Durham University, having completed a Master's with Distinction also at Durham and a BA (Hons) First Class at King's College London, both also in Theology. My focus of study has shifted over the years and I'm now focusing on the more unusual kinds of Christianity that have popped up over the millennia. My doctoral thesis examines very early attempts at reconciling the Christian God with the presence of evil in the world - sharp RE students will recognise the description of a "theodicy," though the word was not invented back then!
During my PhD, I've been able to do a little teaching in first year seminar groups, which has honed the teaching skills I've been developing since working with younger children from about the ages of 15 to 25, and then tutoring primarily secondary school age pupils for the next ten years on and off. I genuinely enjoy teaching, especially Religious Studies, because it encourages us to really think and engage with the topics, form our own opinions, and learn to defend them rigorously - which can also be a lot of fun!

I started tutoring as a way to earn a little extra money towards rent and groceries the summer between the first and second years of my BA at KCL, all the way back in 2018! I'd worked with young children nearly all my life, having taken a slightly roundabout path to university, but I quickly found I loved working one-on-one with young people, too. I found students of all abilities to be insightful and curious - given enough encouragement!
We typically spend hour or two hour long lessons discussing whichever topic on the curriculum was most appropriate - whether for an upcoming test, alongside the school's pace, or zooming into a student's particular area of difficulty. "Discussion" can mean going back over content together, reading a key text, planning an essay, making revision notes, or a verbal debate - whatever helps cement knowledge, understanding and RE's necessary skills. Learning to really evaluate is absolutely central to RE in all its forms - and on each exam board! - so not only is it helpful to foster discussion through lessons, my students have always found it much more engaging and enjoyable, too!
I work most often with GCSE and A Level Religious Education or Religious Studies pupils; however, I would be excited to work with degree students or anyone on a less standard track, too. I look forward to hearing from you!
