About Aram

Classical languages are one of my greatest interests, and there's nothing I like more than to share that passion with other people. A few things about me: I studied classics (BA) at the University of Amsterdam, and I got my MA degree in Latin and Greek (with distinction) in Paris at the Sorbonne. During the pandemic I also did an MA in art and architectural history.

Before this year, I was a teacher of Latin and Greek at a highschool in the Amsterdam area, which I enjoyed greatly. Both me and my students had a wonderful time working on various projects, reading texts and engaging with the rich culture of Antiquity. Currently, I'm doing a PhD at the Warburg Institute, in which I explore the field between architecture, ideal cities and fantasy worlds in literature - which is why I've come to London. However, I am very happy to have a few students on the side.

About the lesson

My basic principle is, after Horace's maxim, to make my lessons both useful and enjoyable. Whether people bring their textbook or grammar exercises, or if they want to read something completely new, I always try make a connection between the material and the student's knowledge and personal interests. Each student has their own talents as well as their room for improvement. In my approach, I try to locate these strengths and weaknesses so as to give specific help and advice.

Students might need help with very clearly defined goals, like GCSE or A-levels, but they also may just want to improve their Latin. Often they bring their own material, like textbooks or exercises, but some people are looking for a teacher who challenges them with new texts and authors they might have never read before. To all these people I am happy and well-equipped to offer my help.

(!) Whoever is interested in living Latin: I am a spoken Latinist (I stayed at the Accademia Vivarium Novum for a year), and as such I have experience directing reading sessions with university students and professors (among others, with members of the Oxford Latinitas Project).
