About Maria

I believe that teaching guitar is not just about imparting technical skills, but about guiding students toward finding their unique musical voice. Every student who walks through my door is a potential artist, and I see my role as helping them unlock their creative potential. My lessons are tailored to the individual—whether they are just starting out or are looking to refine their skills. I work with beginners to build a solid foundation, teaching them basic chords, strumming patterns, and simple melodies while helping them understand how these elements come together to form songs. As students progress, we explore more advanced techniques such as fingerpicking, barre chords, and improvisation. I place a strong emphasis on music theory, helping students understand how harmony and melody function in different musical contexts, but I ensure that theory is always applied practically, so it enhances their ability to play and compose. Ear training is another critical component of my teaching, as I want students to be able to play by ear and transcribe music with confidence. I also encourage creativity and originality, pushing students to explore songwriting, arrangement, and performance. I strive to create a fun and dynamic learning environment where students feel safe to experiment, make mistakes, and grow. Whether students are interested in performing in a band, writing original music, or simply playing for personal enjoyment, I provide the guidance and tools they need to achieve their musical goals and to continue growing as musicians for years to come.

My approach to teaching guitar is built on the belief that music is both a discipline and a deeply personal form of self-expression, and the best instruction nurtures both simultaneously. I see every student as a unique musical personality, not just a learner of technique. That’s why I begin by learning about their goals, inspirations, listening habits, and how they prefer to process information—whether visually, aurally, or kinesthetically. From there, I develop an adaptive, student-centered curriculum that combines technical fluency, theoretical understanding, and creative freedom. My technical instruction is methodical yet flexible: from day one, I introduce foundational skills like posture, fretting hand dexterity, picking accuracy, and tone shaping, ensuring these become ingrained habits. As students grow, we build on those fundamentals with techniques like fingerstyle, tapping, bending, muting, and rhythmic articulation, chosen according to their musical style and aspirations. I incorporate music theory from the outset—not as an abstract subject, but as a language that explains why music sounds the way it does. We explore intervals, keys, harmonic function, chord substitutions, modal applications, and voice leading, all within the framework of real music. I also place a strong emphasis on ear training. Students learn to recognize intervals, chords, and scales by sound, and we engage in transcription work that trains both memory and musical intuition. Rhythm is treated as a living, breathing skill: I use groove-based exercises, syncopation drills, and full-body rhythm training to develop an internal sense of time and ensemble awareness. I use technology strategically—play-along tools, recording apps, drum machines, and DAWs—to help students explore the interaction between their playing and the broader musical landscape. Creativity is not an afterthought; it’s integral. Whether it's riff writing, melodic improvisation, or full compositions, I help students unlock their own musical ideas and provide tools to shape them—exploring structure, contrast, dynamics, and timbre. I also work with students on stagecraft, live performance preparation, and mental training to manage nerves, build presence, and perform authentically. I regularly provide constructive feedback, celebrate growth, and create performance opportunities—virtual or in-person—to give students a sense of achievement. More than anything, I strive to cultivate curiosity, resilience, and joy in each of my students. I want them to feel not only that they can play the guitar, but that they have something worth saying through it. Teaching, to me, is about guiding students toward artistic independence, where they are no longer just playing someone else’s music, but fully owning their own sound, story, and creative vision.
