It is my pleasure to write this letter of recommendation for Mr. Thomas Vigneras to accompany his applications for careers in the field of music education and for enrolment in a university Music Education program in his pursuit of a Master’s degree.

Thomas has been an enthusiastic and notable participant as both a student and volunteer in my Summer Jazz Band enrichment classes offered to high school students in July through the Richmond School District’s Continuing Education, Summer Learning Program. As a student, Thomas displayed excellent drumming skill and familiarity with jazz drumming techniques which he modelled for the less experienced drummers and was a responsive and supportive band mate. As a volunteer, Thomas worked a total of 84 hours (approximately 4 hours a day over 21 classes) with high school students aged 11 to 18 to help them learn and practice elements of the Jazz idiom. During the Summer Jazz Band courses, Thomas initiated private lessons with drummers which were highly appreciated by the students and had them asking for more. Some examples of the elements Thomas covered in these lessons are:
o Demonstrating and teaching grooves from different genres and cultures such as rock, fusion, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and Jazz on drum kit and other percussion instruments.
o Imparting advice on how to learn drum parts effectively, both by ear and with sheet music (including sight-reading).
o Working on snare drum rudiments and etudes with students to improve technique and rhythm reading.
During full ensemble rehearsals, Thomas was very responsive to the needs of the students by providing positive feedback and advice as the group worked through repertoire. Thomas also worked to encourage and help students during sectionals and small group/combo rehearsals.

Thomas already possesses many of the virtues that make a good educator and believe that he will be a great teacher if given the opportunity to deepen his knowledge of music education and pedagogy.
