About Rachel

My degree, Human Sciences, is unique in being half biology, including genetics, physiology and ecology, and half social science, including sociology, human geography and demography. I also do statistics as part of my course. I think maths has been a part of almost every module I have done in some way. By doing my degree, I can see maths as more than just a methodology, but something that can be applied to real life and other disciplines, and I think this can make maths more exciting for students.

I did Biology, Maths and French A Level. In maths, I got an A*, and in biology, I got an A. Doing both the GCSE and A Level exams that students are taking now, means that I have first-hand experience in what the students are going through, and therefore can give meaningful advice.

I have experience private tutoring. This has been through organising free tutoring for GCSE students by sixth formers at my previous school in maths, english and science. I coordinated it, organised work to do in these tutorials, and tutored students myself, four times a week. In this process, I learned not only how to help a wide range of students in both biology and maths, but I also learned how to keep organised.

I am also access rep for my Oxford college, and therefore spend a lot of time talking to sixth form students about going to university, and discussing their options. My experience in outreach has meant that I am not just limited to teaching a subject, but also have the interpersonal skills to recognise the context in which students are learning the content. Therefore, I find I can act as a support through teaching the subject, and recognise what is the best exam advice I can give a student in their different situations.

My teaching style is friendly and positive. Exams go hand-in-hand with a lot of stress and pressure, which is only made worse when you do not see hope for reaching the goals you want. I think by recognising the improvements students are making, and encouraging positive discussions on their mistakes, this can be important in motivating students to keep going and progress.

I am most experienced in tutoring GCSE maths, and can help with the entire spectrum of the GCSE maths course, including those aiming for a 9. One of the main focuses of the rise of new exams is problem-solving, and less focus on remembering facts. This is especially true in mathematics, and therefore a large part of my teaching will not only be about learning the different skills, but also building up methods to recognise when to use different methods, and ways to approach problems where you simply do not have a clue. Problem-solving is a skill that is often the difference between succeeding and failing in these new exams, but it is also a skill that is most valuable to take forward, beyond the maths exams.

I will structure the lesson around an individual's needs, but generally speaking there are three main components of my teaching:

1) Talking through the specific problems a student has tried on their own, or in class, but has struggled with. By going through, step-by-step, problems that they do not understand, it helps to unpack what is involved in answering them.
In webcam lessons, I will ask the student to send me pictures of these problems before the class, so I can prepare to go through it.

2) Teaching methods. I can go over the entire maths course and explain things over again, and in different ways, in order to get to an understanding. This is based on what the student specifically struggles with, and I do not always think this is necessary for higher level students (refer to (3) see the alternative to teaching methods).
Outside the class, I will encourage the student to do repetitive maths questions, which is the best way to consolidate these methods.

3) Problem-solving. Often the difference between getting a level 5 and getting a level 9 is not about understanding content, but not knowing when to use the method learnt on the course. Therefore, this will be about challenging and unfamiliar questions, and discussing ways to approach a question like this. It is about overcoming that immediate panic you feel in an exam situation when you are completely lost by a question by letting yourself 5 seconds to feel that panic, and then rereading the question, and thinking it through as calmly and analytically as you can. This is a skill, and is something I think is so often forgotten in the teaching of the subject.
After the class, I will set at least one difficult problem, a long-marker, which will take some time to unpack. The point of this question is to not necessarily require difficult methods, but it is difficult in terms of recognising the use of these methods.

On top of the maths, I am also practised at tutoring biology, with it being a large part of my degree! My teaching style with biology is very similar, with there being a large problem-solving element in exam questions. In contrast to the maths tutoring however, it will be about concepts rather than methods.
