About Aston
I am a final-year DPhil researcher in Biology at the University of Oxford, where I study molecular and cellular processes in plants. My research spans genetics, molecular biology and proteomics, and I also have previous experience with human cell culture.
I have experience teaching undergraduate students at Oxford, both in areas related to my research and in broader scientific reasoning. What I enjoy most about teaching is helping students work through difficult questions themselves: identifying assumptions, interpreting evidence, considering alternative explanations and becoming more confident discussing unfamiliar ideas.
Having gone through the PhD/DPhil application and interview process myself, I understand that preparing for a research interview is different from simply learning more subject knowledge. I aim to provide challenging but constructive scientific conversation that helps prospective researchers develop confidence in their own thinking.

My sessions are aimed at students applying for PhD or DPhil positions in biology and related biosciences.
I offer mock research interviews tailored to your scientific background, previous research and prospective project. I will review relevant materials beforehand so that questions reflect your research and the position you are applying for.
During the interview, I will challenge you to explain and defend your research, interpret evidence, think through experimental design and controls, consider alternative explanations, and respond to unfamiliar questions. We will then discuss your performance, strengths and areas to develop.
My approach focuses on scientific reasoning rather than rehearsing model answers, helping you become comfortable thinking aloud, responding when challenged and communicating your science clearly.
I also offer broader PhD/DPhil application mentoring and critical feedback on your own proposals and applications.
