About Shelby

This December, one of my students is graduating from App State with a degree in social work. I started working with her before she started 8th grade when her parents could no longer support her struggles in reading. We started reading Harry Potter together and had a a movie party every time she finished a book. I'm not sure I actually helped her learn any new skills that first summer, but I did establish a crucial relationship with a young woman who put her heart and soul into her work, and always came up short. I saw where she struggled and got to know where she needed help. I was able to identify her learning disability and helped her get the testing she needed to get support. I helped her understand that having dyslexia did not mean she wasn't brilliant, she just needed to work in different ways. Our friendship has carried on throughout her entire education. I know her entire family and her history, I know when she needs help and when she can do her work on her own, I know exactly what she is trying to say even when the words she type are not even close to what she says. We can be honest with each other and she trusts me to help in the ways that she needs. She is the perfect representation of who I am as an educator.

I could write a paragraph about living in Raleigh, about having three dogs, or about loving my family. I could also tell you all about my degrees in sociology and anthropology, or how I fell into my love for teaching. All of those things are true and, trust me, you will learn about them. But what's more important to know is that I am genuine and honest. You will learn all about me because I want to learn all about you. I am a great educator not because I am smart, knowledgable, and experienced, but because I connect with my students and hold them to a high standard; everything else will follow.

I believe that comfort and trust are at the core of education. No one will learn anything from someone they don't like or don't trust. My philosophy in education is to start with a relationship. From there, everything falls into place. When someone trusts you, they are able to tell you when they are lost or confused, they can tell you when they have questions and get stuck, they'll even show vulnerabilities that might reveal opportunities for quick fixes or crucial interventions. When I know a student, I can find methods or techniques that work for the student, without trying to force a student to conform to a system that will never be effective for them. I can help with almost any subject matter because everyone is capable of learning any topic so long as the material is taught in a way that a student understands. I start with connecting with a student, and then we can cover all the material available. I think my lessons can be summed up with a quote from the teaching community; "some teachers taught the curriculum today, but I taught the students- and thats a big difference." I specialize in working with middle and high school students, and even college level. I am most effective with students who need academic coaching or overall academic support and some content teaching.
