What a pleasure it is to welcome Adam to my flock. He said he was an absolute beginner but during our first lesson today I realized that his exposure to Afrikaans many years ago has been quite accurately recorded in his memory. We didn't have to wait till the second lesson for his memory to come to his assistance. He was even able to construct short sentences when given a single Afrikaans word. What is the "mystery* behind this? A brilliant brain that has been trained to think! A "skill" sadly lacking so often nowadays. Plus, an open and friendly personality. A good conversationalist with a great sense of humor. This is going to be fun

I've met Xanadu and her lovely little daughter Nevaeh that is in grade 7 for our trial and we've already done one lesson. Our little student is facing a real challenge to improve her Afrikaans. Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn it?
I speak Afrikaans fluently because of my origin. I attended dual medium schools where I was taught in English and Afrikaans. At home we spoke both Afrikaans and English. I have always had and still have Afrikaans and English friends and speak both languages daily. Vir my eerste graad het in aan 'n Afrikaanse Universiteit in Afrikaans gestudeer. Ek het Afrikaans, Engels, Duits, Frans en Latyn as vakke gehad. My ander drie grade het ek deeltyds deur afstandsonderrig aan die Universiteit van Suid-Arika (UNISA) behaal terwyl ek bedags gewerk het. When I was a lecturer at the University of Pretoria I lectured in both Afrikaans and English to multiracial students.
Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?
Late President Nelson Mandela learned the Afrikaans language when he was in prison on Robin Island to be able to communicate with the Arikaans-speaking wardens. Baie van hulle het sy vriende geword. Why does speaking this language matter to you?
Speaking Afrikaans is important to me. It is the native language of approximately 7 million South African: 4.8 miljoen van hierdie groep bestaan uit kleurlinge; 2.7 miljoen bestaan uit wit Afrikaners en 600,000 identifiseer as "swart". Van die ongeveer 10.2 miljoen Suid-Afrikaners wat dit as hul tweede taal praat is ongeveer 6-7 miljoen "swart" Suid-Afrikaner. Afrikaans is the third most spoken language in South Africa.
What is the main difficulty in learning this language, and what can help students with the learning process?
Afrikaans is n maklike taal om te leer want daar is min verbuigings in die taal. Wat dit wel moeilik maak is om te leer waar om die diakritiese tekens te plaas. There are rules that must be followed strictly for example where to put the colon (kolon), kommapunt (semi-colon), apostroof, kappieteken, umlaut etcetera. Al die spreekwoorde/ idiome en gesegdes maak die taal ook moeilik maar dit maak dit n pragtige en interessante taal om te praat. Dit is belangrik om Afrikaanse boeke, koerante, tydskrifte en boeke te lees sodat jy kan leer om die te lees, skryf, verstaan, praat ensovoorts. Dit help om te luister hoe die Afrikaanssprekendes dit praat en met hulle te praat. Luister ook na Afrikaans op die radio. Dit is baie goed om verskillende tale te praat. President Cyrel Ramaphosa is n goeie voorbeeld van iemand wat vele tale vlot kan praat.

How has travel or a specific experience helped you to increase your understanding and appreciation of the language?
During my travels through Africa, Europe, Asia, China, UK and the United States of America and people I met, I got to know that Afrikaans is spoken and understood in many countries amongst others Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Swaziland and Namibia. Dit is die jongste moedertaal in die wếreld. Afrikaans word ook gepraat in die Verenigde Koninkryk, New Zealand, Australiἕ en Argentiniἕ. Dit is ook redelik verstaanbaar deur die inwoners van Nederland, Duitsland, Vlaandere, Denemarke en Friesland en pas aan by hulle tale.
