About Benjamin
Hi, I’m Ben. I’m a PhD-qualified higher education tutor with a PGCertHE and 10+ years’ experience supporting university-level study. I’ve taught and supported students at the University of Kent and within a university pathway provider linked to the University of Sussex. I work online-only with UG, Masters and PhD students on dissertations, essays, and theory-led writing across the humanities and social sciences. I enjoy helping students feel confident with complex ideas and turn them into clear, well-structured arguments (sometimes using familiar cultural examples, including film, to make theory easier to apply).

Online-only academic mentoring for UG, Masters and PhD students: dissertation support, essay development, and theory-led writing in the humanities and social sciences. Sessions are structured and marks-focused. We start by making sure the assignment brief is clear and we know exactly what the marker is looking for. Then we tighten your question and shape your main argument. After that we work through your structure and paragraphs, and make sure your sources and theory are integrated into your argument, so your writing becomes more analytical and less descriptive. We can work live in a shared document so you leave with a short action plan. Typical lessons are 60 minutes (30 or 90 minutes available). I’m PhD-qualified with a PGCertHE and 10+ years’ experience supporting university-level work, including at the University of Kent and on a University of Sussex pathway programme. When helpful, I use culturally familiar case studies to show how to apply complex theory (e.g., a “Scream with Michel Foucault” example, using horror cinema to clarify power, discourse and identity). If your session includes pre-reading, please share your document 24 hours in advance.
