About Jay

I have studied English at Scottish National 5 and Higher level, receiving an A grade on both occasions. I currently study History at the University of Edinburgh. My approach to History is much more like high schools tend to approach English, so I am most suited to tutoring English. The basic thrust of my approach to History is that everything is literature in the sense that it relates to a story, which means that History is stories about the past.

I believe every individual is different, so no two sessions can be quite the same. I don’t believe that some students are naturally better at English than others, but that they know the right approach.

My approach has two main aspects. There are the face-to-face sessions (of forty-five minutes), and I also create free tailored demonstration videos for students to watch between sessions (of, for example, me answering an exam question). Why?

In contrast to most other high school subjects (Physics, for example), English is less about what the facts are, and more about how we approach them. The difference can be demonstrated by analogy to sports. A Physics exam is like a high jump final. In both situations, the task is clear (to jump over a bar, to demonstrate our understanding of the facts). Preparation is about seeing we can do this when it comes to the exam.

An English exam is more like a final in football (with the same idea being applicable to tennis, chess, and more). Here, the task we are confronted with is often radically different to what we have prepared for. Imagine you have trained to play against a defensive team and they come out all guns blazing! The situation is similar to being asked to analyse a text on a subject you know nothing about. So, we have to improvise, to think on our feet.

For this reason, the face-to-face sessions are structured like a training game. Like a game is a dialogue between two teams (in the sense that one makes a move, and the other responds), English is a dialogue between the writer of a text and those who are analysing the text. Sometimes I will act as the writer, at other times I will join the student in analysing. The content of these sessions is flexible, so students can bring their own topics, questions, and that kind of thing.

The demonstration videos are more like videos that players watch of ex-players to learn their techniques. I will provide one video per face-to-face session, and I will not test on their content.

I am also happy to set, mark and offer feedback on homework, again as a free bonus. This will be of a maximum of one piece per session, and only if requested.

Please note that I am most interested in tutoring Scottish National 5 and Higher students, since I have taken these myself. However, I will also take on students of National 3 and 4, as well as the English equivalents (GCSE, for example). If you are looking for someone who knows those particular courses inside out, though, please look elsewhere.
