About Nicholas
I am a dual British/Maltese national. Though I grew up on the small island of Malta, I moved to London in 2008 to pursue my dream of becoming an actor. Since then, London has been my home. I graduated from drama school in 2011 and have since worked professionally in both theatre and film. My proudest achievement to date is understudying at the National Theatre in 2023, where I had the privilege of performing alongside Janet McTeer (known from ‘Ozark’ on Netflix). As with many acting careers, opportunities can ebb and flow. During the quieter periods, I’ve discovered a passion for teaching English - a field I've enjoyed and excelled in alongside my acting career. With several years of teaching experience, combined with my expertise in English phonetics and actor training, I know I’m one of your top choices if you wish to elevate your English speaking skills, build your confidence, and refine your accent. English is my first language, though I also speak Maltese (a language unique to Malta). I have studied French and Italian and am currently practising Classical Arabic on Duolingo. Additionally, I work closely with Spanish speakers and have developed a strong understanding of the language, including common challenges Spanish speakers face when learning English.

I offer a structured and straightforward teaching methodology for teaching English Pronunciation and Phonetics, helping students gain a deeper understanding of how native speakers produce the language (native speech patterns). I cover areas of English pronunciation that are often overlooked by the language teaching industry, including (but not limited to): 1) articulation of speech sounds that do not exist in the learner's native tongue, 2) vowel production - tongue, jaw and lip movements - helping learners to distinguish between similar sounding vowels and produce them distinctly (e.g. law ≠ low, uncle ≠ ankle, this ≠ these, father ≠ further, to name just a few) 3) The schwa vowel and its prevalence and importance in spoken English 4) The significance of 'content' words and how these affect prosody, i.e. the patterns of stress and intonation in English 5) Commonly held misconceptions about English spelling (the written form), certain spelling patterns, and how all this relates to pronunciation... ...and so much more. I'm TEFL (CELTA) certified, having taught the language at all levels since 2008, but in 2015 I gained Cambridge IPA (International Phonetic Association) certification and now specialise in accent reduction coaching. I am also a professionally trained and represented actor, having worked in both theatre and film, and juggle accent coaching with professional acting engagements. I incorporate elements of my actor training in my teaching methodology, including simple but effective techniques to improve learners' articulation and vocal cord engagement (voice work). My lessons are aimed at advanced or proficient speakers of English who need to take their English speaking skills to the next level, normally because of work/career-related reasons; either to boost their credibility and overall confidence in the workplace, to strengthen their presentation skills and/or ability to deliver (sales) pitches with impact, or to improve their public speaking skills. I always begin my learner-tutor relationship with a 45-60m assessment as a 'get to know you' first session, and for me to learn the individual student's specific needs and areas of weakness. Afterwards, lessons are typically 60 minutes long, held once a week (although students occasionally opt for two hours per week). I'm affable and friendly, I love what I do, and while I have set course material, I will always adapt my lessons to suit each and every individual person's needs and interests. Perfect! Nick is incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and skilled at explaining complex concepts in a simple and understandable way.
