About Carolyn
I have taught voice for twenty years using methods that have not changed because they were never broken in the first place, working with roughly eight hundred fifty students across two decades of serious instruction. My training was rigorous and my teaching reflects that rigor directly, with no interest in diluting proper technique to make lessons feel easier or more casual than they should be. I am not the teacher for students seeking a relaxed hobby experience, and I say that clearly upfront so expectations are correctly set from the very first meeting. I am, however, exactly the teacher for students who are serious about developing real, lasting vocal ability and are willing to put in genuine, consistent effort. My former students have gone on to strong exam results, competitive placements, and professional singing work, achieved through discipline rather than shortcuts of any kind. I hold high standards because I respect my students enough to believe they can meet them, not out of unnecessary harshness for its own sake. Parents and adult students alike consistently tell me that my structure, though demanding, produced results no gentler approach ever managed to achieve for them previously. After twenty years, I remain entirely unapologetic about expecting real work from every single student I take on.

I do not believe in shortcuts, gimmicks, or making lessons "fun" at the expense of real technique, and I say that plainly to every student before we begin. Posture and breath are drilled thoroughly and correctly from the first lesson, because I have watched too many singers ruin their voice chasing quick progress instead of solid fundamentals. Scales are practised daily, without exception, and I expect students to arrive having actually done the work, not merely intending to. Diction is corrected precisely, syllable by syllable where necessary, because sloppy pronunciation is sloppy singing, full stop. I select repertoire deliberately to build specific skills in sequence, and students do not choose pieces beyond their level simply because they like the song. Feedback is honest and exact, not softened for comfort, because comfort has never once produced a genuinely excellent singer in my many years of teaching. I hold every student, regardless of age, to the same standard of preparation and seriousness during our time together. Progress here is measured in real technical competence, not in how a student feels about a given lesson. Students who commit fully see results that last; students looking for an easy hour elsewhere are welcome to look elsewhere.
