About Andrew

With a B.Eng and M.A.Sc in Mechanical Engineering, and appreciable experience in designing, fabricating, and programming mechatronic systems, I offer a solid understanding of engineering theory grounded in practical applications. Since graduation, I've served as a Roboticist for the NASA-sponsored air-LUSI instrument, working on-site at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC) on two occasions as we flew a robotic telescope on a high-altitude aircraft! My recent role as a Research Engineer at McMaster University involved designing, fabricating, and testing a second-generation robotics subsystem for the air-LUSI telescope, with plans to deploy the system on future NASA AFRC flight campaigns.

In addition to four TAships during my MASc, I've privately tutored more than 30 engineering students over the last 5 years, ranging from first-year topics in physics, statics, and fluid mechanics, through upper-year courses in machine design, dynamics and control, and robotics. My primary goal is to develop the students' independent problem-solving abilities, so that they may, in the near term, approach exams with less anxiety and more confidence, and in the long term, tackle increasingly difficult courses with a concrete knowledge base and effective learning tools.

Aside from the more structured lecture-tutorial-exam cycle, I enjoy working with hardware and software to build cool robots! I'd love to share my experiences with software (Python, C/C++, Bash, ROS/ROS2) and hardware (various sensors, actuators, motors, microcontrollers, Raspberry Pi, computer vision) to inspire your ideas for future projects. I'll supply the hardware and we can work on cool projects together!

The main goal is to develop the student's independent problem-solving skills -- necessary for individual study and successful exam/test taking. I like to keep the mood light and stress-free as we solve problem sets and exercises together, building confidence with fundamentals at the beginning and then targeting more complex problems as we go along. We won't just solve problems in blind succession though, but instead take a more intentional approach by working through the problems that address each person's particular gaps.

My lessons are geared toward highschool students in grade 11/12 math and physics classes, as well as college/university engineering students. My full course list is below, but don't hesitate to reach out and connect if you're unsure about a certain topic.

Highschool:
Functions, Advanced Functions, Calculus and Vectors, Grade 11/12 Physics.

College/University:
Statics and Mechanics of Solids, Kinematics and Dynamics, Fluid Mechanics, System Modelling and Simulation, Machine Design, Mechanical Vibrations, Control Systems, Robotics.
