About Bruce Thierry
I grew up between cultures and languages, studied architecture at UC Berkeley, and found my way to film at NYU Tisch, where I was a teaching assistant to Spike Lee. Since then I've spent fifteen years making movies: directing a feature that became a New York Times Critics' Pick, shooting series for Amazon and SundanceTV, and photographing a film premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival this fall. I also write fiction, and my novel in progress won a 2026 literary award.
Teaching has been part of my life since my early twenties, when I taught poetry in June Jordan's Poetry for the People program at Berkeley. What I learned there still shapes how I teach today: rigor about craft, generosity about where people start, and real attention to each student's own voice. I live in the South Bay with my family, and there's very little I enjoy more than watching someone realize the film they want to make is actually within reach.

I'm a working film director and cinematographer. My first feature was a New York Times Critics' Pick and won the Special Jury Prize for Directing at the Los Angeles Film Festival, and I've shot series and features for Amazon and SundanceTV. I trained at NYU Tisch, where I earned my MFA and was a teaching assistant to Spike Lee. A film I shot premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival this fall.
Here's what I believe about teaching film. The camera is easy. The hard part is knowing what you're trying to say, and every craft choice - the lens, the light, the cut, the line of dialogue - flows from that. So we start with your story and work outward to the technique. Students learn faster this way, and the work comes out sounding like them.
Lessons are built around whatever you're actually making. Bring me a script, a shot list, rough footage, or a scene you're stuck on, and we'll get our hands on it together: break down the problem, look at how great films solved it, and leave you with a clear next step. I teach directing, screenwriting, cinematography, lighting, and visual storytelling.
I work with everyone from total beginners writing their first short to advanced students prepping festival submissions and film school applications. Wherever you're starting, my job is the same: help you find your voice and give you the craft to back it up.
