About Julia
Born in Holland, I began playing the cello at a young age. Early on I developed a free, independent and creative personality.
After completing my undergraduate degree in The Netherlands, I moved to England where I achieved a postgraduate diploma at the Royal College of Music in London.
Over the last year, I have enjoyed playing private chamber music concerts and teaching a varied group of both young and old cello students. It has been great to connect with people online, doing practice sessions as well as one-to-one cello lessons. I have started to write down my thoughts in the form of a little book on what I think and do to stay mindful and excited about playing, and learning on, my cello.
*****
My multi-faceted musical career is testament to my constant desire both for personal growth, and for finding new ways to communicate with my audience.
I am energised and excited by interaction with fellow artists and pupils, and by contact with my audience. My great interest in people, and their interpretation of art and life, allows me to develop and learn constantly as a teacher. My mission is both to provoke a reaction, and to bridge the gap between audience and performer.
This coincides with my conviction that, as human beings, we have an endless capacity to learn. As a cellist, I have performed with some of London’s major orchestras, as well as playing chamber music concerts throughout Europe. Being an all-round musician, I have worked with a wide range of artists from various creative disciplines, ranging from painters and actors to fellow musicians, and covering an extensive repertoire that encompasses early music, jazz, improvisation, folk, and contemporary compositions.

Connecting sensation, imagination and intellect in order to thrive - and make beautiful music
My teaching has at its core a simple philosophy: each student I meet is a unique individual whom I want to listen to and observe, in order to inspire and challenge him or her, as well as finding the best way to interact with them.
I love to unlock my students' potential, and show them that they are capable of more than they expected. In teaching I strongly believe in the power of developing the person as a whole to grow by instilling the fun of learning and excitement of development, the power of patience and listening, and an endless curiosity.
Working with students, I aim to ignite their love of music. I teach them how leaving their ego out of their playing will enable them to learn with a more patient and open attitude. We create awareness of how the student can use their body as well as their mind in achieving their goals. We then look for practical, physical and mental tools to enable expression of ideas to flow freely on the cello.
Ultimately I consider my job a success when my students grow into independent and audacious cellists who love to learn, and who understand the power that music has for themselves and their environment.
