About John
I’m an Oxford-educated composer and musician offering friendly, personalised tuition in piano, violin, music theory, composition, jazz and music production.
My musical training combines a strong academic foundation with extensive practical and professional experience. I studied at the University of Oxford, hold an LTCL Diploma in Performance with Distinction, and have studied composition at the National Film and Television School (NFTS). My work as a composer has given me experience writing and producing music for film and other visual media, alongside a broad background in classical and contemporary music.
This combination of academic study, performance and professional composition informs the way I teach. I don't believe in learning music as a collection of rules to memorise: I want students to understand how music works, develop their ears and musicianship, and gain the confidence to apply what they learn creatively.

What I teach:
Piano: Lessons tailored to your level and interests, covering technique, repertoire, musicianship, harmony, improvisation and playing by ear.
Violin: Individual tuition for developing technique, musicality, sight-reading and confidence, with repertoire adapted to your interests and level.
Music Theory: From the fundamentals through to advanced harmony, analysis and musicianship. I can also provide support for GCSE, A-level and other academic study.
Composition & Arranging: Developing musical ideas into complete pieces, with guidance on melody, harmony, counterpoint, structure, orchestration and arrangement.
Jazz & Improvisation: Practical jazz harmony, chord voicings, improvisation and understanding how to use theory at the keyboard.
Film & Media Composition: For aspiring composers or musicians interested in writing for picture: developing themes, working with narrative, synchronising music to image and creating professional-sounding scores.
Music Production: Guidance in Logic Pro, MIDI, virtual instruments, arranging, orchestration, recording and turning a musical idea into a finished production.
Whether you're a complete beginner, an experienced player looking to develop further, preparing for an exam, studying music academically, or simply wanting to become more creative and confident, I'll tailor lessons to your goals.
My aim is to make lessons both enjoyable and genuinely useful — giving you practical skills that you can continue to use independently, rather than simply teaching you what to do for the next lesson.
