About Louis

I’m Louis, a 21-year-old from Meath with a real passion for Spanish. I got an H1 in the Leaving Cert and have spent a total of 9 months living in Spain, where I learned to speak the language the way people actually use it. Since then I’ve worked in sales, where my job was to listen to what people need, explain things clearly and keep them motivated, and those skills carry straight into tutoring. I’m friendly and relaxed in lessons, so students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, and I want every student to leave each lesson understanding something they didn’t before.

About the lesson

My lessons are one-to-one, 60 minutes long, and built around strong fundamentals in Spanish. Students who understand how the language works do better in every part of the exam, and they stop relying on memorised answers.

Starting point: In the first lesson I assess where you are, covering vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening and speaking, so I can see exactly what’s holding you back. From there I build a plan around your gaps, whether you need to go back to the basics or you’re already strong and want to sharpen your exam technique. Every student starts in a different place, so the lessons aren’t the same for everyone.

Fundamentals: We then build the foundations that need work: core vocabulary, sentence structure, verb conjugation and the grammar that holds Spanish together, such as ser versus estar, the past tenses, the future and conditional, and the subjunctive. I explain the reasons behind the rules so you can use them in new situations.

Once the fundamentals are solid, we apply them to each part of the Leaving Cert:

Oral: Natural conversation practice on the main exam topics, plus role-plays.

Aural: Listening practice with past-paper recordings and techniques for picking out key details.

Reading comprehension and written work: Reading texts quickly, answering in the form the marking scheme wants, and writing letters, emails and diary entries with feedback on accuracy.

I got a H1 in Leaving Cert Spanish and know the course inside out, and I lived in Spain for 9 months, where I picked up a near-native level of Spanish. My lessons suit Junior Cert and Leaving Cert students at any level, from those who need to catch up to those aiming for a H1.
