About Isabel

I am the eldest child of English parents, who emigrated to the USA before I was born. By age 10 I skipped a year of maths and science, and upon graduation I had top marks in the highest level of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Calculus and Statistics offered by my school, and thus received an offer to study Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge (Trinity College).

From my years of experience in both formal and informal tutoring arrangements, I am very good at tailoring my explanations to the current student, and meeting them where they are in their understanding. My first student was my younger sister, who wanted to learn to read early so she could understand videogame dialogue. I later became the unofficial STEM tutor on hand during theatre rehearsals, helping with people's homework between scenes. With my official tutoring experience, I had the fortune to work with a few students continuously, which gave me lots of feedback to refine my teaching skills.

As for why I want to teach, it is as simple as I enjoy doing it. In my spare time I volunteer in climate science communication, because I love communicating the exciting new research that is being done everyday to the general public. Seeing the moment an idea clicks in someone's head never gets old. I also feel in debt to the many great teachers I've had in my educational journey, and would love to pass on their lessons.

IDEAL STUDENT: Years 7-9 seeking maths and science instruction, open to tutoring GCSE level content but will not advise exam preparation.

ETHOS: My role as a tutor is to provide additional instruction on topics which students find challenging, identifying any confusion with the fundamentals of a topic and providing the student with tailored instruction to strengthen these fundamentals. This approach requires the active participation of the student, as in my experience students learn best when they are fully invested in the process.

LESSON STRUCTURE: Productive lessons have the student bring example classwork/bookwork, where I then observe the student do some work unassisted. The rest of the lesson is spent going over sticking points, until the student feels confident completing the classwork/bookwork on their own.

DURATION: Lessons typically last between 30 minutes and an hour. These can be scheduled regularly (example weekly), or on a "as need" basis.

QUALIFICATIONS:
-Spent 4 years tutoring students grades 6-8 (years 7-9) maths and science while attending High School in the USA. Some students were with me for 3+ years, from grade 6 to starting grade 9 (start of GCSEs).

-Graduated with a Masters of Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, where I also did my undergrad in Natural Sciences. This degree requires a very strong maths foundation, as the algebra, calculus, trigonometry etc are necessary tools in most scientific pursuits.
