  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak this language fluently because it's part of my heritage, my origin. Being born and raised in Panama, Spanish is my first language, and the language of my family and community. This innate connection to the language has always been a part of my life.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

A character that represents the culture of the Spanish language could be Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Though he has passed away, his legacy lives on. He was a Nobel Prize-winning author from Colombia, and his works beautifully encapsulate the essence of Latin American culture, philosophy, and the magic realism that is often associated with our literature.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

A phrase that I particularly like in Spanish is "Pura Vida". Even though it is originally from Costa Rica, it is well known throughout Central America. It embodies a lifestyle of relaxation, happiness, and a love for life, which I think is a significant part of Latin culture.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking this language matters to me because it connects me to my roots, my community, and my identity. It's the language that I think and dream in. It's the language of the stories my grandparents told me, and the jokes I share with my friends. It's a vital part of who I am.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The main difficulty in learning Spanish can often be the gender of nouns and the conjugation of verbs, as these can be quite complex compared to some other languages. To help with learning, I would recommend immersion, practice, and making use of resources such as language learning apps, books, and conversation with native speakers. Also, having patience and persistence goes a long way.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

An anecdote related to my language learning would be when I was helping international students learn Spanish. I recall a time when one of the students, initially struggling with the pronunciation of the double "r" (erre), eventually nailed it after weeks of practice. The joy and excitement on his face were priceless, and it reinforced my passion for teaching and sharing my native language.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

My travels have significantly helped me increase my skill and knowledge of the Spanish language. Even though I visited countries where Spanish is not the primary language, like Norway and Finland, I always managed to find Spanish-speaking communities. This experience showed me the universality of the language and its different dialects and accents.
In Spain, I had the opportunity to experience the language in its original form, which is quite different from the Spanish we speak in Panama. This helped me appreciate the richness and diversity of the Spanish language.

Traveling to Florida was particularly interesting. Although it's in the United States, there's a significant Spanish-speaking population. Interacting with them allowed me to witness how Spanish has adapted and evolved in a primarily English-speaking country.

These experiences have not only broadened my understanding of Spanish but also deepened my appreciation for the language's adaptability and global reach
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

What makes me a Superprof in language is my native fluency, cultural understanding, and first-hand experience teaching others. I have seen the difficulties that non-native speakers face when learning Spanish and have developed strategies to help overcome them. Also, my background in data science allows me to bring a unique analytical perspective to language learning, enabling me to break down complex aspects of the language into understandable parts.
