About Carlos

I was born and raised in the United States of America, in the Bronx, New York City. Besides native English, I also speak fluent Spanish and Italian. I am currently learning German (beginner level).
I speak Spanish because my parents are Ecuadorian. They immigrated from Ecuador, but I was born in the United States. I grew up speaking Spanish with my parents at home, but among my siblings and friends, we did everything in English.
Countries I’ve visited: Ecuador, for three months; I lived in Italy for two years; Germany, for 10 days; and I recently moved to Spain two years and a half ago.

Education: M.A. in Catholic Philosophy; & Global Development. B.A. Social Work. Most of my schools were in New York City (Bronx, Staten Island, Queens, and Manhattan). Outside the city, in upstate New York, I studied in Long Island and Oneonta.
Growing up in the Bronx, New York, all the schools I attended were public (not private). Many of my classmates were born in the Bronx and had parents who were first or second-generation immigrants to the United States. Their parents, like mine, had immigrated to the United States from Hispanic countries. The Hispanic Americans that I grew up with were Puerto Rican, Dominican, Nicaraguan, Mexican, and Ecuadorian. Besides the Hispanic population, I also had many African American classmates and a few Italian and Irish classmates.
I had many bilingual teachers of Hispanic background. Most of them were Puerto Rican Americans, African Americans, and Dominican Americans. Lastly, after my college graduate degree, I moved to Long Island, NY, where I befriended other Hispanic populations from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. My Interests are: Writing novels, short stories, theater, and poetry; swimming, playing chess, and playing American football; Hip-Hop and Salsa music; and Drawing sketch art. Lastly, I thrive on missionary and volunteer work, especially in many Catholic organizations, where I learn and teach about the unconditional love of God our heavenly Father.
Online Teaching Experience: 1 year English; 4 months Spanish; 1 month Italian; 3 days German; 2 months Latin; 6 months Philosophy (Logic & Metaphysics).
In-Person Teaching Experience: 1 year as an assistant teacher for Kindergarten children in a private school; 15 years as a Youth Minister; 15 as a catechist teacher.

I use Google Meet video chat and have a flexible schedule.
The classes are for adults, but if children are interested an adult must accompany them.
My teaching method consists of the use of the following: 1) TV shows (sitcoms), movies, and music to help students tune their ears to native speakers within a real-life context; 2) Audio recordings of target vocabulary words with emphasis on student participation, dialogue and conversation; and 3) individualized vocabulary based on student personal goals along with highlighted syllables and phonetic international symbolizations.
