About Shayma
Hi! My name is Shayma, and I am an undergraduate studying English and History at University of Warwick. I have a strong passion for English. I achieved A’s in both English Literature and Language at A level, as well as A’s in both Literature and Language at GCSE. My goal is to inspire my students to develop an interest in English, a subject often perceived as boring but is incredibly rewarding once you get the hang of it.
I have a strong understanding of the different exam boards and their specifications, as well as requirements needed to achieve top grades. Often, it is simply a case of practising along with becoming deeply familiar with the specification to really secure the high bands. My goal is to help students maximise their potentials.
In my lessons, I focus on applying each assessment objective through active recall and engaging activities. We will analyse responses, pinpointing how they meet the assessment objectives, and if they don’t, how they could improve. There will also be a focus on subject terminology. By gaining familiarity with subject terminology and applying it accurately alongside hitting all of the objectives, students will secure higher bands and gain confidence.
My approach to tutoring will address both their strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, my sessions are designed to help students boost their confidence, as well as making English a subject they can enjoy!

My lessons will be structured around incorporating key terms into essays. We will begin by defining important concepts that help develop our thinking and introduce us to key ideas. For example, we might define "masculinity" and explore its meaning in society, then connect it to Macbeth as a character. Alternatively, we could focus on another key term like "hamartia" and relate it to Macbeth’s character as well. This approach will also be applied to poetry questions and across the English curriculum in general, as AO1 emphasises the use of subject-specific terminology.
The main activity of each lesson will include a brief summary of the topic, followed by a blank extract that students will analyse. This method promotes active thinking and allows students to put their skills into practice, strengthening their AO2 critical thinking abilities.
The tasks I incorporate will address the assessment objectives outlined by the exam board in a manageable, bite-sized format. This ensures that the content doesn't feel overwhelming, while gradually building students' understanding and skills. By establishing a solid foundation first, students will be better prepared for more advanced work.
