About John
I love talking about music. And one of the best tools to help you do that is an understanding of music theory. What goes into making a piece of music so powerful? And if you’re a composer, how can I apply these concepts to my own work.
Because i love this stuff so much, I am very passionate about it, which I think helps the student be engaged. I love the feeling I get when I see a light bulb go off for a student - when some connection or idea finally is clear. But more than light bulbs, it’s knowing that from then on, the student has created a new pathway of understanding in his or her heart and mind that hopefully they’ll carry through for the rest of their lives.

I teach with a practical approach, focusing on the specific aspects of theory or composition that the student is working on.
I also like helping the student develop a logical approach to remembering the material, relying on tried and true formalas or logical connections to tackle the material instead of a lot of rules and exceptions to those rules. I’m very good at discerning what approach works best for each individual student.
During a typical lesson, I will start by identifying the specific topics/questions the student would like to cover then spend the rest of the time working on those topics, leaving time for review and for questions at the end.
