About John
I am a professional in electronic music composition with over 20 years of experience across production, live performance, and teaching. My bespoke works for sync and licensing have been commissioned for advertising, gaming, film, and television, with notable placements including Channel 4 and the BBC. As a live electronic artist, (look up Jonathan Krisp) I have performed with Patrick Wolf and as a solo act, collaborating with diverse acts and briefs to communicate effectively with varied audiences. My practice blends analogue and digital signal processing, field recordings, and forward-thinking approaches such as modular synthesis and generative techniques, extending across orchestral scoring via Kontakt and ambient works. An independent artist, my releases have been supported by BBC Radio 1 and BBC 6 Music, and my previous album was archived by the British Library in 2021 as part of the UK’s audio heritage collection. I balance art with craft, maintaining deep technical proficiency across DAWs (Ableton Live, Max for Live, Pro Tools, Logic Pro) and hardware, including outboard gear, while focusing on composition, sound design, and mixing. In parallel, I develop and deliver BA-level music production and sound engineering courses, supervise undergraduate projects, and design innovative teaching materials, with a commitment to inclusive practice that supports diverse learners through clear communication and targeted learning support.

I tailor every lesson to you, focusing on the areas you need most. Identifying those priorities is a continual part of my teaching approach. When we cover production and composition, I use any ideas you have as a starting point to shape and refine techniques. Depending on your goals, we might explore composition techniques, sound design, track structure, mixing, mastering, and other topics relevant to your work. I offer both overviews and in-depth dives into synthesis, sampling, mixing, mastering, arranging, and structuring. For students aiming to improve mixing and mastering, I’ll often request project files so I can demonstrate the techniques we’ll cover, letting you hear the impact before you try it yourself. I’m happy to share my own versions of these projects for reference. For sound design, we’ll cover how synthesizers and samplers work, creative use of effects and signal routing, and tips to get the most from your software or hardware. If you’re interested in topics not listed above I can design a personalised syllabus that suits you—digital, analogue, or acoustic audio and music. I’m always open to trying something outside the box, so just get in touch and we’ll plan the best approach! DAWs I use regularly: Logic Pro and Ableton Live (11 & 12).
