About Derek
I am an MSc Chemistry tutor with over 4 years of teaching experience, passionate about helping students understand chemistry in a meaningful and responsible way. I enjoy guiding learners through the core ideas of green chemistry and sustainable synthesis. My sessions focus on building strong fundamentals while connecting concepts to real environmental challenges. I teach students how atom economy helps reduce waste and improve efficiency in reactions. We explore the role of catalysis in making processes faster, safer, and more sustainable. I also introduce solvent-free reactions and discuss how small changes can greatly reduce environmental impact.
I believe chemistry should always consider people, safety, and the planet. I help students design environmentally friendly processes through practical examples and simple problem-solving techniques. My teaching approach in Chemistry is nurturing, supportive, and fully personalised to each learner’s level and goals. I focus on clear concepts first, then connect them to real-world problems and modern applications. Lessons cover organic, electrochemistry, biochemistry, industrial chemistry, environmental chemistry, and green chemistry principles. I also introduce topics like pollution control, waste reduction, renewable materials, and sustainable chemical processes. Students learn how chemistry shapes healthcare, ecosystems, and responsible industry.
I encourage conscious chemical thinking by asking meaningful questions and guiding learners to explore solutions on their own. Short activities, visual explanations, and practical examples make complex ideas simple. I enjoy working with learners from different backgrounds, including science, wildlife photography, and medical technology, helping them see chemistry from new angles. Sessions are interactive, calm, and motivating so confidence grows naturally. I provide strong support for exam preparation, assignments, and skill building.
