About Nicky
Science education has been at the heart of my and career. I hold a bachelor's degree in Biology and Environmental Studies from Amherst College. In September 2021, I graduated with a master's degree in Biological and Environmental Sciences and a certificate in Science Writing and Rhetoric at the University of Rhode Island. From research cruises and excursions in salt marshes, to leading programs at a marine education center, and engaging in collaborative projects domestically and internationally, I communicate with diverse audiences on scientific issues. I have 3 years of experience tutoring K-12 students in subjects from Geology to English, and I currently tutor a 3rd grader and 5th grader via Zoom on a near-daily basis, in addition to offering an array of remote editing services to students from 6th grade to the undergraduate level. My past work as a teaching assistant at the University of Rhode Island and a mentor at various science organizations has given me additional experience crafting lesson plans and connecting with kids and young adults. At my current position, I engage in scientific outreach, education, and research at a local non-profit to provide better pathways for food security in the New England region. You can be assured knowing that science communication is a skill developed over many years.

My teaching style molds to the individual student's needs, strengths, and weaknesses. In general, I believe that writing about science is the key to understanding it. As such, my lessons are writing and discussion-based. I often use visual aids such as infographics and animations to enable conceptual understanding of the topics. I follow a systems-based teaching design by introducing multiple concepts to encourage analytical thinking. Science today is embedded in the ways we live like never before; it is important to give students the opportunity to think about how a particular concept could relate to their everyday life. In my past teaching experiences, I have found this strategy to be best for memory retention and student interest.
