About Tanya
I have experience tutoring K-12 students at the Sylvan Learning Center, college students at Tulane while I was an undergraduate, and teaching (microbiology classes and labs) and tutoring medical students (individually) at the LSU Health Sciences Center while I was a graduate student.
I taught numerous biology classes at the college level at Nunez Community College and at Xavier University.
I currently have my own children in grades 7 and entering college, both of whom I have supported and continue to work with through math and science courses (including AP biology). At their elementary school, I taught after-school science clubs for two years with lots of hands-on science experiments and dissections, so students could learn through applying fun, practical skills, while mentally cementing concepts from their theoretical lessons.
I have also spent lots of time volunteering to support teachers with art, science, reading and holiday projects in the classroom.

I like teaching one-on-one because this setting allows the student to be comfortable that the instruction is tailored specifically for them. In the beginning, I evaluate the student in terms of their understanding of a particular topic along with the student’s interests and capabilities. Then, I help them to set goals and lay a good foundation to conquer a subject. When explaining a topic to a pupil, I break it down into the simplest terms possible, find out what they understand, and move forward from there. I teach well because I like to understand my students and meet them at their grasp of a subject so that we can proceed from there to meet and exceed academic targets.
Additionally, I am very organized. This includes having defined checkpoints for the topics that I'm teaching. I like to make sure that my student and I are on the same page in terms of understanding before we move forward. I also like sitting down with people and talking about different learning techniques (like using mnemonics, good note taking skills, etc.) that might help enhance their ability to grasp and retain information about a certain topic. I try to find angles that might make the subject more compelling for them. Then, I like to provide a flexible framework to cooperatively enhance their understanding of the lesson. In this process, I also like to provide useful skills that they can bring as a toolkit into other learning settings.
