What is Economics and what's the differences between Microeconomics and Macroeconomics ? [6]
*Economics* is the study of how people, businesses, and governments make choices about scarce resources.

We have unlimited wants but limited money, time, land, labour. Economics looks at how we decide what to produce, how to produce it, who gets it, and what trade-offs we make.

In short: *Economics = choices + trade-offs + incentives*

*Microeconomics vs Macroeconomics* [6 points]

Think of it like zooming in vs zooming out on an economy.
**Microeconomics** **Macroeconomics**
**1. Focus** The "small picture". Individual parts of the economy The "big picture". The whole economy
**2. What it studies** Individual households, firms, specific markets. Example: Why the price of bread goes up, how Netflix sets prices, consumer choices Entire countries. Example: Inflation, unemployment, GDP growth, government budgets
**3. Key questions** - How do consumers decide what to buy?
- How do firms set prices?
- How does supply and demand work in one market? - Why do economies grow or shrink?
- What causes recessions?
- How does interest rate policy affect the country?
**4. Main tools/concepts** Supply & Demand, Price elasticity, Market structures, Profit maximisation, Consumer behaviour GDP, Inflation rate, Unemployment rate, Fiscal policy, Monetary policy, Exchange rates
**5. Decision makers** Individuals, households, single companies Governments, Central Banks, International organisations
**6. Goal** Understand how markets work and how to make efficient choices Understand overall economic performance and keep the economy stable
*Simple analogy*
Imagine a forest.
- *Microeconomics*: Studies one tree, how it grows, gets sunlight, competes with nearby trees
- *Macroeconomics*: Studies the whole forest, the weather, rainfall, forest fires, and how all trees together affect the climate

*How they connect*
They’re not separate. If many individual firms raise prices = micro decisions → that causes inflation = macro problem.
And if the government raises interest rates = macro policy → that affects how much you borrow to buy a car = micro decision.

Want me to give examples using South Africa? Like how Eskom price hikes are micro, but load shedding’s effect on GDP is macro.
