About Rhys
I'm currently studying MEng computer science student at the university of Southampton where I have begun learning Java on my course this being the third language I have focused on.
I am interested in continuing to learn more about programming wherever possible, and as such I have tried using languages such as Delphi, Python, visual basic and Java. I have also created a simple game of Tetris, an A level maths core one revision tool which would create questions and present the answer to look at, and a 2d sprite based game which, although in early development it has features such as sprites targeting the users mouse and keeping sprites positions relative to another sprite constant on its rotation. I have posted a demonstration of this on YouTube ((concealed information)
For two years I attended a Saturday class at Funtech where I learnt about programming and the concepts behind it. My first language was c# and in which I learned the concepts of encapsulation and its importance in object-oriented programming languages.
during the recent summer I had a full time intern-ship at a IT security company which specialise in privilege user account management. The company ran a agile style work environment, in which I partook in the daily stand-up meetings and the by-weekly sprint meeting to discuss the workload for the next couple of weeks.
My role at Osirium was to update and document some of their existing test scripts which required using SSL in-order to communicate with the Linux server.
While I was there I was working on a Ubuntu based system using vim as my main editor and learnt the new OS as I worked, since then I have changed my personal laptop to also be Ubuntu so I don't forget how to use it effectively.
Previous personal projects I have worked on include a website which I built to prototype a concept, it was designed to be in essence a game of consequences mixed with a choose your own adventure book. I used the bootstrap CSS as a starting point and tailored it to my needs to make my site look professional. Whilst I built the HTML5 templates for use with the jinja2 templating language.
Python being the second language I have studied in detail I used and began learning with the website which was compiled from the template and managed by a python script with the flask micro framework, this would make the outputted HTML dynamic depending on what content was currently available without building masses of HTML files.
The Websites content was managed by an Sqlite database which was assessed by the python script and the data was fed through to the template creating the HTML dependant on this information.
I have studied maths at A-level and I am currently doing a mathematical module in my current studies, in my free time I have also worked on an A-level revision tool which creates maths questions and their answers to the scope of my previous exam board, I used this during my first A-level year to study for my exams. At one point I toyed with porting it to windows phone and got a rudimentary version working as a proof of concept.
I have had work experience at Cisco for two days during which I set up basic switches and configured basic protection such as an administration password and opening a port. I also helped install a 5k switch in a test network following a network topology diagram, which consisted of connecting ports from one device on a network to another using fibre optic cable.
For two years I was a member of the BCS Berkshire branch board and attend their meetings, and was the Young Professional representative for my area.
I am a member of the finish construction team at the Virgin London Marathon. For the last two years I have worked in a team to build the finish line and the surrounding area with the fencing and bannering needed for crowd control and the aesthetics of the race.
The team then dismantled it all again so the road is “fit for the Queen” the next morning. A have also worked on the construction of this year’s Prudential RideLondon cycling event, in similar roles of construction before and after the race, during the race my job was to ensure there wasn’t an incident between the general public and the cyclists at one of the events exits.
I have represented my college on a number of occasions outside college time at open days hosted at other venues.
