About David

My B.S. from MIT in engineering and over ten years of experience in STEM education, coupled with my passion for engineering, technology and education, make me an ideal fit for tutoring your future scientist or engineer. I am committed to creating a dynamic and inclusive learning environment where every student feels empowered to explore, innovate and grow, and can see themselves as the next generation of scientists, engineers, and problem solvers. I recognize the importance of differentiation and personalized instruction to meet the diverse needs of students and understand there is not a one-size-fits-all solution to STEM and Maker curriculum.

I have over a decade of experience creating engaging and innovative curriculum for K-12 students focusing on engineering design, electronics, robotics, programming, and Maker skills. Throughout my engineering training (B.S. in Mechanical and Ocean Engineering from MIT), I focused on the hands-on classes and extracurricular engineering teams. My experience with K-12 STEM education at MIT began while at its Edgerton Center. I helped coordinate multiple outreach events and engineering design workshops for local youth, as well as developed project-based curriculum in electronics and robotics. The Center’s teaching philosophy is best summed up by this quote from founder, Harold “Doc” Edgerton: “The trick to education is to teach people in such a way that they don’t realize they are learning until it’s too late”. This has become a strong tenet of my methodology when creating curriculum.

I strive to create lessons and projects which push students to think like real engineers and scientists. I encourage students to take ownership of their projects and leave inherent flexibility to incorporate their individual ideas and passions. Each project gives them options to choose and personalize their learning path, with the opportunity to safely “fail” and iterate until they reach their customized final design. It is also extremely important for me to create a strong community, where students feel they can voice new ideas or try things out without being judged or labeled as a failure. Most projects I create have a strong team or collaborative element, even if it is within a larger competition-based scenario.

I draw on my wide range of maker skills and technical backgrounds to create interdisciplinary projects, combining different tools and techniques, both modern and traditional. I have extensive experience with most digital fabrication and prototype machines (3D printers, laser cutters, CNC routers, vinyl cutters, craft cutters, water jet cutters), traditional maker techniques such as woodworking and metalworking with hand and power tools and fiber arts (crochet, rug tufting, knitting machines. Additionally, I also have a strong background in 3D design, electronics, robotics, and programming. I routinely make custom 3D printed robots for education, designing and developing custom circuits and circuit boards, along with developing the software to control them in both text and block-based coding environments. I also have founded and coached multiple competitive robotics teams to the State Champion level within the FIRST Tech Challenge League (FTC), bringing significant knowledge about the allowed components and game-specific programming (Blocks, onBot Java, Android Studio).

Multiple studies have shown that students which participate in hands-on STEM or robotics programs are significantly more likely to major in a STEM or computer science field. I firmly believe that introducing technology and computer science at an early age can have profound benefits for students. Project-based learning utilizing real-world skills and hands-on components is vital to getting more students not only involved, but excited and excelling with STEM and Maker curriculum. Catching students at an early age can shape their perception of what it means to be a scientist or engineer, and more importantly, what type of people pursue these careers. This can be incredibly important for all students but especially so for underrepresented groups which can traditionally self-select out of these careers fields and subsequent opportunities.

Skills gained from a technical and computer science education at an early age also benefit students who do not end up in a STEM field. This type of education fosters creativity, critical thinking, logic, and problem-solving – vital skills for a well-rounded education and beneficial in any career or life path. Moreover, this increase in digital literacy at an early age and overall aptitude with technical systems will greatly benefit all students and improve their studies in subsequent grades.
