About Anna
Hello! I am Anna.
I'm currently a student in a Masters program in (English) Communications at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. Before that, I earned an English degree from the University of Winnipeg. I have been a LIFE-LONG writer, and language is truly my passion. I have written plays, films, podcasts, and academic articles and right now my main goal (besides teaching) is to become a journalist .
I have always been a natural teacher, finding myself in a teaching or training role in whatever job or project I take on. People gravitate towards me when they want to learn how to do new things, and so I have just leaned into it! I have taught many subjects over the years, but because I am a writer, English is my favourite subject to teach. I love the challenge and reward of watching someone improve their skills and confidence as a communicator!
As I said, I'm going to school for journalism and I like journalism kind of for the same reasons I like teaching: I feel called to help people understand things in a deep and personal way, to help them feel that they are relevant to the world, and that their actions can make the world better. I'd love to have the opportunity to do that for more students.

First and foremost, I am motivated to see my students succeed and find joy in learning English!
My methodology is strengths-based, meaning after an initial assessment of your skills (written, spoken, reading or all three), I will plan a series of lessons where your strongest skill will 'lead the lesson' and help you improve in the areas you find most challenging. I am big on games and practical exercises that are as close to the 'real world' experience as it is possible in a class setting. Most importantly, I really care about my students and want them to feel valued by me. I believe these are the best ways to keep students motivated--which is the key to excellence in learning and in life!
A typical lesson plan might look like the following:
- 5 minute review of last lesson and revisiting goals for today
- 15-20 minutes learning new material via game or exercise
- 10-15 minutes synthesizing new material with what we already learned
- 10-15 minutes creative exploration (conversation if spoken English lessons, free-writing exercise, interactive reading exercise)
- wrap up and set goals for next lesson.
I am best suited to students who have a higher level of English-- either native speakers or advanced EAL students who need help with improving their English reading, writing and grammar. I prefer to teach high school or university students, because my strongest area of teaching is to help students become more confident, strong and persuasive writers. However, I am flexible. It all depends on the person. Teaching is personal, after all!
Note: I am an advanced student of French (spoken and written) and am working towards becoming bilingual. Until I am more comfortable I have not listed French as a teaching language, but I am more than happy to mix English and French in lessons with native French speakers.
