About Alison
My name is Alison Axtell and I have a passion for helping others. I grew up being surrounded by kids because my mom ran a daycare business out of our house. I always knew I would one day be someone working with children. I received my master's degree in Elementary Education and that launched my career. I work in an underprivileged area because I truly care about helping each and every kid, no matter their situation. I care deeply about each and every kid and will do whatever it takes to make sure they feel successful. I have been a teacher for 7 years now and tutor after school for 3 years. I want the best for every kid and my goal is to reach as many kids as possible in order for them to build a strong future!

My approach to tutoring is student-centered, supportive, and adaptable to each learner’s individual needs. I believe students learn best when they feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, so I show them it is okay to make mistakes as long as we can learn from them. I am also very encouraging and understanding and can adjust on the spot when a student isn't comprehending something. I adjust my teaching methods based on the student’s learning style, current level, goals, and areas of difficulty.
I typically begin by identifying what the student already understands and where they are struggling. From there, I break complex concepts into smaller, manageable steps. I do this by understanding where the misconception is or what is causing the student to struggle in order to address their specific need. I then will give clear explanations, examples, some guided practice, and questions to help the student develop a strong understanding of the material. Rather than simply giving students the answers, I encourage them to work through problems themselves so they can develop independent problem-solving skills.
A typical lesson begins with a brief review of previous material already taught and an opportunity for the student to ask questions that might've come up since the previous tutoring session. We then focus on the main topic or skill for that session, working through examples together and gradually transitioning to independent practice. I check for understanding throughout the lesson and adjust the pace whenever necessary. At the end, we review the key concepts, identify anything that may need additional practice, and discuss what the student should focus on before the next lesson. I also like the student to have a takeaway or strategy that they can use in their classroom at school independently to feel successful!
What sets me apart as a tutor is my patience, ability to explain concepts in different and unique ways, and a commitment to meeting students where they are and pushing them out of their comfort zones. I understand that struggling with a subject does not mean a student is incapable of learning it. I focus on finding the explanation or approach that makes the material click for each individual student. I also prioritize building confidence and encouraging students to become more independent learners.
My lessons are intended for students who want additional support, clarification, or practice with their coursework. I am comfortable working with students at different levels and adapting lessons to their specific class requirements and academic goals. Whether a student needs help understanding a difficult concept, preparing for a tough task at school, completing practice problems or homework, or strengthening their overall skills, I aim to provide personalized instruction that helps them make the progress they need and the confidence in themselves to feel like they can do anything!
