About Miya
I have a bachelors and masters degree in vocal performance with ample experience in classroom, one on one, and group education with honors, from Pacific Lutheran University and Northwestern University respectively. I have been teaching privately and in large settings for over six years and have taught ear training, music theory, classical piano, classical voice, musical theatre, and other genres as well. In addition to teaching, I have sung opera and musical theatre professionally all over the United States and won titles in competitions such as NATS and the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition.
I began teaching as a form of supplemental income after I graduated high school, and I grew to love it so much I continued it in college on top of full time music school. During my gap time between degrees, I dedicated all my time to teaching (over 40 students!) and it is now a full part of my musical life.

I teach all ages (4-75), all backgrounds, and all sorts of wants/needs. Some students just want to learn how to sing in choir more freely. Others are pursuing music degrees. Some want to learn how to play a song or two on the piano. Others want to take RCM exams. I love meeting students where they're at and helping them out along the way! I believe everyone can and should make music! In our lessons, depending on your skill level, we will focus on different elements of technique and musical expression. With piano, this will look like scales, arpeggios, and hand posture. For voice, we will discuss and work on elements such as breath, posture, and use specific exercises tailored to each student to challenge their individual range and musical style. Depending on each student’s goals, we will work on a song or songs which could culminate for a recital, audition, or just for fun! Music is for everyone.
