About Justin
Hello there. I'm a seminary grad with an MA focused on the history of theology, so I've had seminary training in the Bible, theology, and the history of Christianity, and I've continued to study and pursue these passions for many years. I also have 15+ years of experience teaching college-level humanities (history, literature, religion, philosophy, etc.), which has enabled me to place scripture and Christianity in a broader framework of understanding, drawing inspiration from figures like C. S. Lewis and the Inklings in seeking a richly integrated, big-picture understanding of the world (with scripture feeding into my understanding of creation, and creation feeding into my understanding of scripture). I can teach you about the Bible, theology, the history of Christianity, or all of the above.
I start by getting to know you along with your goals and how you like to learn. Our time together will then be guided by this foundation—personalized and structured yet flexible. I'll meet you where you're at and take you to the next level, at your pace. I think it important that we enjoy the learning process, so I aim to make the material come alive.
I emphasize deep understanding. For example, if teaching the Bible, we'll focus on the deep structures of scripture, its historical context, its overall storyline, connections between different parts of scripture, major themes, figures, concepts, etc. Our time together may involve informal discussion of the subject matter, digging into texts together, discussing concrete application, interlacing the big picture with the concrete and the personal (how concrete stories and people fit within the big picture), etc. For example, we may trace the concept of temple through various parts of scripture (from the allusion to the cosmic temple in Gen 1, to the First and Second Temples, all the way through Christ as God's temple, and by extension his body, the church, and so on), or unpack the meaning and character of God as understood in Christianity vs. other religions/philosophies, or trace the influence of Christianity and its ideas on Western civilization and beyond.
I can help you grow in your personal knowledge of the Bible, theology, and/or Christian history, or provide assistance with classes you may be taking in these areas, whether you need assistance with assignments, exam prep, practice tests, and/or detailed feedback on writing and essays to increase your writing skills. Whether you want to grow personally or academically (or both), I'm here to help.
