About Haven

I am an enthusiastic learner, with a wide variety of interests and a passion for teaching. Between all of my jobs and experiences, I always go back to tutoring to fill the gaps. It allows me to share my knowledge of various subjects, and has the added benefit of cementing my own understanding. Though my background is a bit scattered, I have a personal interest in every subject I tutor, which I would love to share.

Maths was the first subject I fell in love with, until I discovered chemistry in high school. I struggled to choose between them, so I studied both. Then, right before graduating undergrad, my friends and classmates introduced me to ecology. I thought I could combine my interests, and began a masters program in environmental engineering. The subject was fascinating, but engineering the environment is not the same as engineering for the environment.

My last and best job before moving to New Zealand was doing ecological restoration. It was something of a dream job, so I am now applying for postgraduate programs in the subject. I have a distant dream of becoming a professor in this field, so that I can continue studying and sharing this passion.

I typically approach lessons from the student's perspective. Asking them what they learned each week is my first step to figuring out what they struggle with and what has been working. I have a knack for coming up with example problems on the fly, so I will frequently make new questions that we can work through together. This way I can help them unpack the logic behind problem-solving, or devise tricks such as mnemonics for memorization. Occasionally I have requested the syllabi from my students' teachers, so that I can get ahead on planning for a student that is struggling to keep up.

For students looking for advanced math tutoring, I like to start my first session with a few of my favorite math puzzles, problems, and paradoxes. From there, we can choose a subject to orient ourselves, and I will come up with lesson plans ahead of time. A couple popular subjects are game theory and probability/statistics, but topology is my personal favorite.

My standard is a single hour-long session per week with no outside assignments. I have done up to three sessions per week, and some longer sessions leading up to big test days, but I believe students already have enough on their plate. Tutoring works best when it relieves stress, which only happens if it is fun, helpful, and not a constant obligation. I want my students to hear something in class and think "I didn't fully understand that. I'll bring it up with Haven." and not "that was confusing. Now I have to go over it 100 times in tutoring."

All ages are welcome! I look forward to hearing from you.
