About Andres

I am a daring composer and arranger based in Toronto, Ontario, currently pursuing my Master's Degree in composition at York University after completing my Bachelor's Degree in Jazz Studies at Capilano University. My musical journey has been enriched by studying under the mentorship of esteemed musicians such as 2-time Latin Grammy Nominee Francisco Avellaneda, Bill Coon, Ron Samworth, John Korsrud, and Bradshaw Pack.

Drawing inspiration from a diverse array of musical influences, including the innovative works of Piazzolla, Ligeti, Steve Reich, and John Korsrud, my compositions traverse the boundaries of various musical genres, including Latin, Jazz, Modern Classical, and Rock. My unique musical voice is characterized by a fearless exploration of heavy counterpoint, captivating dissonance, intricate interlocking rhythmic patterns, innovative orchestration techniques to create mesmerizing textures, and a sophisticated use of harmony.

As a dedicated musician and composer, my commitment to both performance and composition has provided me with a comprehensive skill set. This blend of practical experience and academic rigor equips me to guide aspiring composers like yourself in your own creative journey.

In our composition lessons, we will delve deep into the art of crafting music, exploring fundamental music theory concepts, compositional techniques, and the development of your unique musical voice. Whether you're just starting your composition journey or looking to refine your skills further, my aim is to nurture your passion and help you realize your musical aspirations.

Join me in the world of composition, where we can embark on an inspiring and educational musical adventure together. Let's bring your musical ideas to life and make beautiful music that resonates with your soul.

My teaching methodology is rooted in the principles of observation and imitation, which I believe are fundamental to nurturing a student's compositional prowess. In my classes, we embark on a journey where the focus is not just on teaching, but on fostering an environment of creative exploration and self-expression.

At the heart of our lessons is the objective of crafting a compositional portfolio that becomes a canvas for each student's unique musical voice. We begin by closely observing and analyzing the music that resonates with you personally, as well as the compositions of renowned artists from a diverse array of musical traditions. By delving into both Western European art music and American Art music and Jazz, we gain insights into the rich tapestry of musical history and innovation.

Through this process of observation and analysis, you'll learn to discern the subtleties, techniques, and nuances that define various musical styles and genres. This is where imitation comes into play – as we study the works of prolific composers, you'll have the opportunity to incorporate their techniques and concepts into your own compositions.

Our classes are not limited to compositional techniques alone; they encompass a holistic approach to music education. You'll delve into music theory to understand the underpinnings of musical structure, harmony, and form. Orchestration will provide you with the tools to create rich and captivating sonic landscapes. Musicianship will be cultivated, enabling you to not only compose but also understand and appreciate music at a deeper level.

Throughout our journey together, your personal musical preferences and aesthetic inclinations will serve as guiding lights, shaping your compositional path. I aim to create an atmosphere where your creativity can flourish, allowing you to develop a compositional voice that is uniquely your own.
