About Hugh
I'm currently studying at university, and am considering pursuing a career in education afterwards - tutoring allows me to take a step into that arena, and to continue to develop my hands-on teaching experience . I think maths is a deeply misunderstood subject that is very often taught in schools as a matter of rote, or memorisation, rather than actual understanding, and I find great pleasure in helping others see some of the structure that lies behind it, which inevitably leads to better grades.
I also enjoy building the one to one relationship with a pupil, and being able to see their knowledge and understanding develop over time is a deeply rewarding experience.

Understanding and problem solving are the two key principles of my tutoring style. Lessons will be conducted over zoom/teams, and will either be talking through and discussing a subject they've covered to help their understanding, working through some problems together to see a concept in action, or going over some problems they've attempted themselves, in particular ones they've struggled with. The best way to get better at maths is practice, and so I'm also happy to assign problems and to do some marking outside of lessons to help with this. Patience is important to me, and if someone doesn't understand something, I find there's almost always another way to look at it.
Lessons will typically be an hour in length.
I am currently in the final year of a Master of Mathematics at St Andrews University. I used to tutor in school as part of the department run 'maths club', and have done some work with primary school students on grammar school entrance exams.
I'm comfortable tutoring any age up to and including A-level (and can tailor to a specific syllabus), but have most experience with secondary school students.
