About Binish

Hi! My name is Binish and I'm doing a Masters in Biomedical Neuroscience in Melbourne. I have about 4 years of experience in tutoring Chemistry and Biology to secondary school students. Being constantly called a nerd at school, I have always been known to have a passion to learn. Now that I have seen how fruitful my path to gaining knowledge has always been, I am passionate about sharing my wisdom and nothing makes me happier than seeing my students achieve success through their concerted efforts.

I go the extra mile to make sure that my students enjoy while they learn, as opposed to the bland and colorless lessons one may experience in a school environment. I love using real-life application-based examples to help ingrain difficult concepts and make them easier to learn. I focus on conceptual understanding and building from the basics, and then moving on to exam prep.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in the field of Science kept growing throughout my years in school. However, it wasn't until my last couple of years in high school that I became determined to pursue a career in Biology. Since then, I have been passionate about teaching, drawing on some satisfying experiences with helping my peers with studying the sciences.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Biology, Chemistry, Math and Health and Human Development. Out of these, Biology is most definitely my favourite as it is related to the field of study I am currently pursuing. My aptitude in Math, however, is a little lower since I am more inclined to learning theory and practice over solving equations.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I remember my Social Science teacher once telling me that going into Medicine would have me go down a path where I may cease to pursue my other interests like public speaking and humanities. Although I am pursuing the sciences, she has inspired me to keep developing my potential even in the skills I may not necessarily use every day.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Empathy, being a good listener, passion to teach, patience and being able to keep preconceived notions about a student aside while teaching them with no judgement
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I was in Year 12, my Physics teacher had to go on maternity leave. She left me in charge of tutoring my classmates, working through practice problems with them. My classmates found my teaching style easy to understand and applauded me on my first attempt.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

One problem I had initially faced was having to memorise things. I easily overcame this by employing various methods of visualisation, improving my understanding of various concepts.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I think I am more passionate about engaging in valuable scientific research than any of my other endeavours. Although, I do hope that regardless of whether or not I make it big in research, I will still be able to impart beneficial knowledge to thousands of young minds throughout my career.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

I think that my ability to quickly build rapport with students while also ensuring that they learn is what makes me a Superprof.
