About Thomas

About Me
I am a professional organic chemist and educator with over 14 years of experience guiding students through the rewarding complexities of general and organic chemistry. My approach to science has always been about uncovering the chemical/physical principles that govern natural phenomena.

Deep Academic Roots & Research Highlight
My foundational expertise is anchored in advanced physical, organic, and organometallic chemistry. A defining highlight of my graduate career involved conducting research at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, MD. There, I used ultrafast (femtosecond-timescale) time-resolved infrared spectrometer to probe the dynamics of organometallic photochromes undergoing linkage isomerization. This intense focus on molecular mechanics and electronic behavior shapes how I analyze complex chemical problems—and how I teach them—to this day.

Adaptable Teaching Approach
With more than a decade of instructional experience, I specialize in translating highly abstract concepts into intuitive, manageable frameworks. I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to education. Instead, I adapt creatively to each student's unique learning style, building tailored mental models and organizational systems that turn overwhelming coursework into predictable, approachable science.

The Modern Frontier: AI & Machine Learning in Chemistry
Today, my passion for molecular behavior extends into the digital landscape. I actively work at the intersection of chemistry and data science, utilizing cheminformatics and machine learning architectures to predict critical chemical properties, including biological activity, ADMET, permeability, toxicity, stability, reactivity, and solubility for example. By combining traditional chemical intuition with predictive AI, I bridge the gap between classic laboratory foundations and the future of scientific technology.

About the Lessons: My Teaching Philosophy
Chemistry has a reputation for being one of the most difficult subjects, but I believe that once you secure a firm grasp on the core, fundamental concepts, even the most advanced topics become surprisingly manageable.

My goal is to help you see the logic behind the science:

General Chemistry can feel like a medley of disconnected topics. Together, we will tie those pieces into a cohesive, understandable picture.

Organic Chemistry is highly abstract and demands a type of spatial reasoning we rarely use in daily life. It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the complexity, but Organic Chemistry is entirely grounded in fundamental physical and electronic laws. Once you understand why electrons move the way they do, seemingly impossible problems suddenly become logical and approachable.

What Strategy Will We Use?
There is no single "right" way to learn chemistry. Over 14 years of teaching, I have learned that the best approach is the one that clicks uniquely for you.

When we work together, you can expect:

Tailored Explanations: I adapt entirely to your learning style, creatively developing novel ways to represent complex material until it resonates with you.

Memory & Organization Systems: I will equip you with multiple proven frameworks to organize concepts within your working memory, making exam recall sharp and stress-free.

Notes and Concept Reference Sheets: Although you are strongly encouraged to take your own notes, I will provide my notes from the lesson, along with organized concept reference sheets and worksheets when appropriate. I will not assign you homework unless you want me to!

A Judgment-Free Zone: If you are feeling stuck, rusty, or completely lost, you are in the right place. We will take it step by step, transforming anxiety into confidence.

Why Choose Me?
Teaching this fascinating science is my passion. Whether you are looking to pull up a grade, prep for a major exam, or master the spatial puzzles of organic synthesis, I am dedicated to providing a warm, reassuring environment where you can truly succeed.

Let’s connect today and make chemistry your next breakthrough subject!

Details

I am new, so I understand that without any ratings/reviews, I will need to keep dropping my hourly rate until someone takes a chance on me (and leaves a great rating!). What you get from a lesson with me is much more than whatever rate I am currently offering. I will provide supplemental materials when warranted, and I will even create new, tailored study guides and worksheets if the need arises. Thank you for your consideration! If you happen to be local and would like to meet in person, I am happy to discuss travel compensation in greater detail.
