About Clarinda
Hi there! My name is Clarinda. I am a screenwriter and filmmaker who spent the first part of her career living and working in rural China. I also have an MS in Global Affairs from the Schwarzman Scholars program in Beijing, a BA in philosophy and Chinese from Boston University, and an MFA from USC School of Cinematic Arts. I began studying Mandarin as a freshman in college simply because I was overwhelmed by the number of Chinese international students on campus I knew little about. I soon fell in love with the challenge of learning the language, which has since taken me to nearly every corner of Mainland China. I am passionate about helping Americans better understand Chinese culture and foreign policy. I love working with people of all ages and would love to help you learn Chinese. However, I won't sugarcoat it, it's a lot of work.

I'd like to first get to know your experience with Mandarin learning and your goals for our lessons. I will design our lesson plans according to your needs. If you're brand new, we'll start with pinyin and learning the four tones. If you're more advanced, we'll see where you'd like to improve. I have several textbooks I can provide copies from or suggest for purchase. For children, I like to use props, photos, and games to make language lessons not feel so much like work. I also like to get outside and try identifying what we see on the street or to try ordering a coffee in Mandarin.
