About Jack
I'm a TEFL-qualified teacher and researcher based in London. I spent five years teaching English in Hong Kong, the last three leading curriculum and assessment for an English department, where I redesigned how we assessed student writing. I recently graduated with an MSc from the London School of Economics and hold a first-class degree in History and French from the University of Manchester. I am interested in politics and international affairs, and have published policy analysis on international development.
I enjoy teaching because I like working with people. I spent five years doing it and found it genuinely fulfilling — learning about a student, their views and their ideas, and helping them get where they want to go. It is also how I teach: once I understand how someone thinks, I can usually see what is going wrong in their English and why, which makes it far easier to fix.

Who I work with
University students writing essays and dissertations in English, and professionals who already work in English and want to be more precise or persuasive. Most of the students I have taught have been high-proficiency non-native speakers — people who are fluent but want more control over how they write and speak. I also work with native speakers on academic writing.
Experience
I spent five years teaching English in Hong Kong, the last three as Curriculum and Assessment Lead at a secondary school. I hold an MSc from the London School of Economics and a first-class degree in History and French from the University of Manchester.
How I teach
I start by working out what a student is already good at, and by helping them find their own weaknesses rather than telling them what I think those are — people improve faster when they can hear the problem themselves. I also spend the first couple of sessions working out how someone learns and how they make sense of things, and then apply that to how they use English, because the same explanation does not work for everyone.
Alongside our sessions, I encourage students to read and listen widely in English. Structures are absorbed rather than memorised, and the more English you take in, the clearer your sense becomes of how you want to sound.
For essay and dissertation work, I work from the student's own draft. We start with what they are actually arguing and what they want to say, and build the structure out of that, rather than imposing a template and asking them to fill it. Most writing problems turn out to be thinking problems, and they are easier to fix in that order.
For spoken fluency, sessions are built around what the student is actually interested in. I find out what they care about and prepare topics from there, using articles, media and the news, so the conversation is worth having in its own right rather than being an exercise. I also do interview and presentation preparation where that is what someone needs.
Lessons
Sessions run for an hour, which suits most work, or two hours where we are working through a longer piece. Online, or in person in London.
